So i have an older laptop (Acer Aspire 5100), Still works like new, but I was wondering what the average idle/ light usage temperatures are? Right now I'm getting a pretty solid temp reading at 45C, which I think it pretty good for a laptop. Anyone else have same/similar model (AMD D-C x64 TK-53 1.70 Ghz) that could give me there temps. Secondly I recently replaced the LCD and inverter. The inverter was for the orginal LCD but i got a matte screen instead of the glossy. I'm not sure whether it's always been like this since the original inverter, but i notice it get pretty warm over the plastic. I'm know there's quite a bit of voltage going through there, but it is it normal to get warm? (not burning temp, but noticeable hot/warm to the touch

    Thanks

Yes, it's normal for most inverters to get hot under load.

I haven't measured CPU temps but I just switched my newer SATA 5100 to a TL-56 chip and my older TK-36 PATA 5100 got upgraded to a TL-50. I've used the best Thermal formula I can find, Artic Cool MX-3, which has a huge heat tranfer capacity, if you look at the watts per sq cm. The only thing that looks slightly better is Liquid Metal 's junction material but that introduces other problems, like permanent bonding.

I might be able to post some temps later today or tommorrow if you really need them .

In a few days I'm moving the chips around again, trying a TL-60 in the newer SATA 5100, and the TL-56 in the PATA 5100.

What I really want to know is whether the S1 Socket in the 5100 is S1G1 or is it capable of taking the new S1G2 chips like the QL and RM and ZM series. but on that note, I have an Ebay QL-60 being delivered.

Thanks for the reply... I was already planning to buy Ceramique which is very similar to what you have except doesnt conduct any electricity, @ 80% CPU for ~20 minutes I got a temp at 67C which i think is pretty good for being a laptop. I'm not concerned at the temperature at all, just wondering what other people run at so if its to much trouble, dont worry about it. Im not sure if its the 5100 or not, but I remember reading something about conflicts with the S1G2 chips making it not totally compatible.. Let me know if it works, since I thought about upgrading mine, but not sure.. Just wish the graphics card could be replaced. Anyway thanks again for the reply.

45C at idle sounds about right.

@MessalineApghar - the AS5100 is only S1G1, the QL60 won't work as the pins are different.

the GPU CAN be replaced but it requires BGA-type soldering tools/technique, which means buying the part, taking the mobo totally out of the case, and finding an electronics repair or engineering shop with BGA soldering equipment. I've seen the soldering re-work sold as an ebay auction for about $60. the x1600 integrated chipset IS available as a repair part but the price is pretty high . Quoting from memory it was over $100.

AND...The MX-2 and MX-3 are both non conductive as well ..at least by their own marketing claims. i haven't tested it .

Thanks. the socket is labeled S1 but no rev type so i thought i'd try it with a cheap chip. can't hurt the board. but i guess i'll just turn the QL-60 back on ebay.

I noticed the Heatsink's fins get dust clogged very quickly on the 5100, probably b/c it's moving so much air. I would plan on taking it off every 6-12 months for a cleanup.

I noticed the same thing, I clean it probably more frequently than that, b/c its so easy to get to.

I meant easily like the the Inspiron E1505 and others that dont require soldering (I also said replaced but i meant upgraded)
