    Hello folks,

My AC power adapter broke and looking for a replacement. Acer's website is so pathetic that I can not even find replacement part number. I wonder if anybody has an idea of best replacement AC adapter?

What is your take on those universal AC adapters? I need one desperately, universal or specific, whatever that will work.

    Thanks in advance.

All you need is a 19V PSU with 4.74A (90W) with a pretty standard plug.
There are two types of plugs - you need 5.5mm outside and 1.7mm inside.

Thank you. I looked the box carefully and it says 19V with 3.42A, most likely 65W. I am reading the difference between use of 90W and 65W PSU but still not too sure if its wise to use 90W. Some articles noted that the laptops have a built-in function where even if you stick 90W PSU, it will still take only equivalent of 65W PSU. Some articles suggest to stick to 65W. It is so confusing, really driving me nuts.

Any recommendation for specific brand? They are from $10 to $70.

If you have an integrated card than yes - 65W will do.
As for the brand - Delta or LiteON are worth mentioning but it doesn't matter too much if you stay away from the cheapest ones.

When buying online mind the length of a cable between the PSU and your notebook - some are far shorter than the cable that comes with the standard PSU which may be inconvenient.

Pardon my little knowledge but which integrated card you are talking about and how do I find that out, like is there any app like hardware inventory like Speccy will check that for me?

My older one was Delta and I looked for the same brand and model but did not show up on any reputable website.
There are few on Newegg. I assume NewEgg does not sell trash, still almost every PSU has some or the other negative review, specifically with heat issue i.e. PSU getting too hot or something. That worries me, because I have carpeted floor and don't want to burn down the apartment.

According to your specs in the signature you do have an integrated card so 65W PSU will be fine.
All PSUs get hotter when the notebook is under load and more power is needed but 65W CPU doesn't pose a threat of starting a fire with this notebook - at least not because of high power draw.

As I said Delta and LiteON are reputable companies but you don't have to limit yourself to those two. I had to replace a PSU in my 5740G lately (the cable got damaged - PSU was OK) and bought a PSU from a company called Akuga (allegedly Japanese made). So far so good.

What is your opinion about this one? Its 90W but I am considering it only because it is a known company and not some China made stuff without any quality control. Although refurbished, still should be better than ebay stuff.

Could you link the one you bought if you are US resident?

    Thanks in advance.

Definitely don't buy this one. A friend of mine bought it - as you can see there are two holes in the cable and each plug/tip has matching pins that are as thick as pins.
These will break off (sooner than later) just like it did for a friend of mine.

As a result you will end up with a PSU that can work fine with any tip that you have - except for the one that you needed.

    What about this one though?

I don't know how I missed this one!!

In description, it does not mention Aspire 5740, but does mention compatibility with my old PSU, part number ADP-65JH DB
