That's because this computer is back from 2003 or so and back then all HDDs were PATA. SATA became widely available in 2005-2006 or so.
PATA drives are still available but are priced a bit like antiques- SATA drive of the same size is a lot cheaper.

are you saying the article is outdated and really meant to say that you can't buy a SATA drive for any computer - period? (still a funny thing to say, but anyway)

the article was written in 2007..

There's a link in the article you've mentioned (dated 2007) to another article on upgrading the HDD (dated 2003). And as a comment to this link they added some information that were not mentioned in the 2003 article- one of them is that you can't put a SATA drive in the Acer 110.
In 2003 they had not written about that because SATA was yet to be invented back then.

So to put it short- this computer has a PATA connector and you have to buy a PATA drive hence the note "you can't buy a SATA drive for the Acer C110"

do you think a PATA->SATA adaptor might be too big?

Adaptor won't fit but there are some 160GB Samsung PATA drives available that are pretty fast and reasonably priced. I've also seen WD 250GB PATA drivers but these were a bit expensive.
