    Hello,

I've owned an Acer 5103 laptop for about half of a year now, and it has never really been able to sleep/hibernate.

I'll explain as much as I can, if you need more detail please ask, I'm just desperate for a solution.

I'm on Vista Home Premium ( Shipped with Vista)
    Its a Turionx2 TL-52?
    ati Xpress 1100 gfx
Its got all the acer e technologies running apart from elock...
    Its got a 1gb ram.
Its got the new 8.3 catalyst drivers for the ati.
Its got windows updates all installed.

Problem - It will only hibernate/sleep sometimes...
Test1 - advanced power options. Set all settings to never.
Set media sharing to - allow computer to sleep.
    Turned off hybrid sleep.
Tested on high performance plugged in. Successful sleep, followed by a successful hibernate.

Test 2 - changed to same parameters, but tried balanced plugged in.
Failed to sleep - appeared to hang, so help power down for 5 seconds and reboot.

Test 3 - changed high performance on battery settings to same as plugged in settings.
    Failed to sleep.

Test 4 - changed back to test 1. Failed to sleep/hibernate.

All I'm wondering is, I am missing something. Is it hardware? Software? Bios update isn't most recent, but acer website doesnt seem to have a bios update available. Or is it vista? Should i wait for SP1?

I attempted to use away mode, and it seemed to be hibernating and sleeping, until I released it was just pretending to go to sleep, while it was still on??

Anyhow, sorry for the long post, I just thought I better be thorough.

    Thanks alot

If it only fails to sleep when you close the lid then you have a problem with the video driver (very common) if it fails other times I can't help you there.

Also there is a bios update but its a pain to find it.

It fails even if I press sleep in the start menu, it doesn't seem less/more common if its closing the lid. So that might hint at it not being the gfx? They are the most recent drivers...

Thanks for the early reply though.

Yeah I would personally rule out the driver. Mine would always sleep from the start menu but rarely from closing the screen.

Did you try update you wireless network driver? The intel wireless driver had some problems with my 5920g. Latest intel wireless drivers solved that. And yes, SP1 brings lots of improvement to sleep/hibernate functionality. I've been running SP1 for some time now and all my sleep/hibernate problems are gone. Make sure you use all the latest drivers and all will be fine once SP1 is released (I hope).

My acer uses the broadcom 43** series wireless, but I haven't updated the drivers for the wireless. I'll give it a go on monday, I've left my laptop with a physicist over the weekend, I'm just hoping he's not gonna take out the circuit boards, and start doing 'better' soldering.

How do you get SP1, and is it stable, cos it hasn't come through windows update yet... do I have to get a beta?

I got a somewhat similar problem on my 5920.
It fails to sleep/hibernate when I remove a USB-device or unplug the power while it is going into sleep/hibernate. Could this be the case?

Hmm I haven't really tested to see if it fails after pulling plug out, or USB but I've just updated my bios to 3.10, which is what acer recommends for xp not vista, but it doesnt seem to have caused any major changes... and also got SP1 for vista, which doesn't seem to have fixed it.

There's just no discernable reason for it to do it sometimes, and not others.

o btw its not a hardware issue, because i installed xp, tried sleep and hibernate, which both worked and then resintalled vista from recovery cds.

I think I my have fixed it. Its not really a fix, but its a temporary solution, that may eventually lead to a permanent solution.

Disabling the wireless network adapter, using the hardware switch on the laptop, seems to mean that I can sleep and hibernate every time, it seems.

I updated the wireless driver on my broadcom 43xx chip. I was wondering what driver anyone else with this chip would recommend?

    Cheers.
