    Hi,
My Acer aspire 5745-6492 was giving me start up error 1 yr after purchase (rt after warranty ended). It finally died, I do not remember the error code but it was similar to 00000000xe. I had tried using repair disc, re-installing etc and nothing worked. Finally I replaced the hard disk and the laptop started working fine. But within 6 months, I am again getting start up error message. Here is what has been happening this time:

When I switch on, I can hear the fan going really loud and the window 7 word/logo appears but window never starts up. I use the power button to switch it off and then when I press it again, I get the message- window start up error- options - repair/ start normally. Generally choosing repair doesn't do anything except to take me through 7-10 steps and then says that it can not. When I select "start normally" windows generally start- somethings takes 3-4 attempts- Any ideas?

Will really appreciate any help. Can't afford a new laptop at this time :(

    PJ

Once you successfully start it launch HDTune (free version is OK) and make a screenshot of a "health" tab.
It's possible that it might be a HDD issue (again).

I did try that. Nothing shows up in the "health" tab. When I run an error scan, it scans all green. What should I do next.
Thanks a lot fro your response- PJ

OK- let's try a different app. Check if ActiveSMART works (it's not a free application but there is a trial version which should do fine)
    I'm interested in this.

I'd like to see the "SMART information" tab though. SMART status is considered a problem only once it reaches the threshold- you can post problems earlier by just looking at raw attributes.

Judging by the SMART attributes the HDD is indeed OK which basically rules out hardware issues.
It could possibly be RAM but that would happen randomly all the time- not just when starting Windows- so it's not RAM.

At this point I would recommend you reinstall Windows.

So, I did re-install the window 7 x2 already x 2. Doesn't fix anything. Also, I have now installed both linux (ubuntu) and window 7. Linus never has any issues at all, its only the windows.
p.s. This error was there before I installed the linux.
I am at my wits end, not sure if I should just get a window XP and install that instead???
