Is the 1.5GHZ Best Buy model going to be that much slower for gaming than the 2.0GHZ in the UK model? How much slower will the 1.5GHZ be at playing games.. They both have the same nvidia 256mb 8600m GT card w/turbo cache. I thought processor speed didn't matter that much these days.
Guess i'm trying to find out if the 1.5GHZ core 2 duo is total crap or not. The Best Buy price of $1,000.00 is a bargin, but is a 1.5GHZ core 2 duo enough? The back of some game boxes seem to indicate a minimum requirement of a Pentium-4 2.0GHZ to 2.4GHZ. How close would a 1.5GHZ core 2 duo be to fitting that requirement?
If not... i am also wondering if the 1.5GHZ processor can be easily swapped out in the future for the 2.0GHZ processor... or if ACER has them soldered into there mother board.
Thanks.. Here's the link to the 1.5GHZ 5920 at Best Buy;

im in the uk and have just preordered the 2ghz version looks like the uk one is 33% faster and has 2x the cache of the us one so i would say yes it would have a difference in "certain" newer games but then again thats just a guess!

It's going to depend on what game you're looking to run on it. I'm playing WoW on high settings and its running great. I haven't tried loading Supreme Commander yet but I suspect it will perform slow with that game with high settings, SC is a VERY CPU intensive game. I'll load it this weekend and report back..

I wouldn't just think about gaming, but for everyday tasks aswell. Your sure to see an obvious difference with a 2.0GHz dual core rather than a 1.5GHz. Am I also right to say that the 5920G in america is not Santa Rosa aswell? (I read it somewhere, but not sure). Us UK/Europe buyers have it lucky then, although there is no HD ROM in the UK/Europe model.

My Ferrari Blew through supreme commander no problem 1.5 will likely have a liitle trouble with that game. all depends on the game.
also you asked about th comparison of 1.5 X2 vs P4 2.0-2.4...
not only does your C2D have 2 times as many cores each core will preform faster... no problem...
the only issue might be that some games won't have the 'attempt to run' feature. - some games(most) check your specs before running. most games if the specs are low will ask if you want to try and run, some don't. -
If it's a good deal, remember you can always upgrade processor down the road, unlike graphics.
So if it ends up working for you as is, win-win.
I'd get the cheaper one. -
yuio he wanted to know the difference between the us and uk model both being core 2 duo but 1 being 1.5ghz 2mb cache and the uk one 2ghz 4mb cache but the uk one doesnt have the hd dvd or the 1gb "turbo" cache

I Brought this Baby Last May(I'm the Seventeenth Customer of launch Day -
I just bought two of these, it's an incredible deal if you can get past the "gems" look. It is on the Santa Rosa platform with a Socket P Merom T5250 Core 2 Duo 1.5Ghz in an Intel P965 Chipset running at 667Mhz bus.
I've just opened it and I'm doing the initial config and everything looks great. Good build quality, no hiccups, nice finish. Even if I get something better I'll just give it to my daughter.
Newegg CPU upgrade down the line if I need it:

Thanks egriffine for the link..
Will the 2.4 core 2 duo w/800mhz front bus work, or would that be pushing it (heat wise).

If you do choose to upgrade your processor to 2.0 would please let me know how to do it (remove it, and replace it). That would be greatly appreciated.
There is a photo of the 5920 with the bottom cover off here. The 5920 has a MXM-II upgradable video card;

There is also a killer 200GB/7,200rpm hard drive w/16MB cache that will fit right in the 5920;

I have a feeling the 5920 is going to be a very popular notebook around here!!!
*I am going to purchase one at Best Buy tonight before the sale ends.. It's too good of a deal to pass up. -
And wow about the MXM! This is I think the first Acer model to use MXM, which is pretty sweet for upgrade options! -
>And wow about the MXM!
yea... That's good news to all of us 5920 owners!
hey.. Can anyone tell from this MXM website photo of the 5920, if the processor would be hard to remove.. I think that's a copper pipe ontop of it. On a scale from 1-10, 10 being the hardest, how tough would it be?Attached Files:

Nice MXM-II link badabing, that's sweet news. Running the laptop very hard over the weekend I'm even more impressed with it.
I agree with Vivek, the heat is mostly from the graphics card. It is overall, a cool running laptop. I think I'm going to sit on this CPU for a while (T5250). I can't really tell any performance difference between it and a T7300 running World of Warcraft, Office 2007, and Visual Studio 2005. Even runs SQL Express 2005 about the same. -
where did you guys see it for $1099 at BestBuy?
-
Sale ended Sunday. It was last week, the week of the 4th of July 2007.
-
sorry to revive an old thread but....
how sure are you guys that the CPU in the 5920 can be upgraded?
might be basing my decision to purchase one on this.
thanks -

I've got an Best Buy 5920-6313. Yes, the CPU (socket P Merom) is upgradeable and it is not that difficult to do. I upgraded mine to an 2.2Ghz Core Duo from Newegg. Search this forum for the 5920 Service Manual. It makes the upgrade easier.
As to whether it was worth it.. I would say "maybe". Games today are much more dependent on thegraphics/GPU than CPU. I played the Unreal 3 Beta on mine before the upgrade and it was fine.
I'm about to post my review of my 5920 with benchmarks for before and after. That should help give an indication of what gain you would see. I also upgraded my HD to an 7200rpm Hitachi at the same time. Which affects my scores, too.
Also, if you haven't already bought your 5920, you may want to consider bidding for one on Best Buy's clearance store on Ebay. I got mine for ~$500-600 US and although it was "used and returned", it was good as new and still had all the stickers and everything on it.
ACER 5920 at Best Buy but with 1.5GHZ
