    Hi everyone,

I'm glad to find this community on Acer products, perhaps you can help me out on this.

Here is a description of the problem:

I purchased this system 5 days ago, so it's brand new. I've been operating on it since then without any problems.

However today I noticed something really unusual, the circular LED around the power button (the one in the middle, just under the screen) started flashing with a green color. The laptop was plugged on the AC adapter at the time. Suddenly my monitor brightness was reduced, as if the system was running on the battery only, and then it came back to normal. This repeated a few times and then it stopped. A few minutes later it started again. While this was happening, the AC adapter LED also dimmed in the same pattern.

It seems that the laptop was not taking any power from the AC adapter and eventually it run out of battery. I tried to charge it and when I plugged the AC adapter back on (I removed it to check it out), the battery orange indicator LED started flashing repeatedly in a very strange way, then the battery LED turned off. This kept happening and I believe the battery is not charging at all as I can't boot the machine anymore.

Also, my laptop does not boot if the battery is removed when plugged on the AC adapter. Is this a normal behaviour?

    Any advice much appreciated!
...and pls ask if you need more info

    thanks

I left the laptop on the AC adapter with the jerky flashing/blinking LED overnight.

Today the battery was still empty, but there seems to be a small percentage on, about 20% but drops quickly. I'm not sure if it's partially charing or what it's doing exactly.

I've sent an email to acer tech support but I haven't heard from them yet. The most weird thing is that the laptop won't work without the battery. Is that how it's supposed to be?

    Anyone some tips pls?

Strange I have not received any reply for two days now. Is this such an unusual problem?

I took my laptop to an acer point shop downtown London and tested it on another power supply. The battery LED didn't flash and was steady amber.
They weren't friendly at all so I didn't have the opportunity to turn on the machine, but it seemed fine to me. Besides the system is fine, it's just running out of battery and I cannot charge it due to the adapter failure.

Acer's response was that they need the entire machine back, but I don't see the point of sending a brand new machine to a repair centre (it's only the power supply), as I always have a bad feeling about non necessary "transportations" for a laptop.

Can someone please help me with the following:

Are the Acer laptops meant to work on the AC adapter without a battery inserted? It is not very clear on the manual and it's my first acer laptop, so my technical background tells me it should work, but it doesn't.

    Thanks

Posting a reply for the sake of those who might get the same problem.

It was the AC adaptor not the battery, ACER was happy with my tests and accepted the adaptor only without the laptop.

They picked it up in one day and returned it "replaced" next day with DHL.

    Sweet

You see...Acer acer support is improving. And Acer will still be a force to be reckoned with :) :)

Sometimes it takes a handfull of good people to stand up and be counted. I am unashamedly an Acer fan. In spite of what has been posted in these forums. Why am I an Acer fan?. Because Acer has given me no reason to dislike them. My 5684 has been 100% reliable and an absolute pleasure to use so far.

Here is a list of the Acer folks that appreciate, understand the product and will help wherever they can. A small minority for a great product:

    bigspin
Evolution-easily the most helpful and knowledgeable guy out there
andyasselin- you are also a star
My mate hoggie- Experienced Acer user who both understands and appreciates their products and has has spent lots of time with various Acer lappies.
Skibums Been on the forums a while. Sensible and only gives advice based on experience. A star.
Hairy Lee Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. Your advise is always spot on.
ME Just dig the value for money and performance that Acer offers. So far reliable too.......

I promise you if you have an issue with your Acer, between us, we will try to help to the best of our ability with sound advice

    Thanks,
    Theo

lol lol lol lol lol lol lol aaaaahhhhh! that's funny, acer support getting better lol

repair #1: main board failure. 2.5 weeks to fix //unit return only partially assembled
repair #2: HDD failure 3 weeks to fix /same issue...
repair #3: main board again; lcd inverter /issue solved, but more were created 2 weeks return time
repair attempt 1: attempted to send in, acer never showed...
repair #4 (2 weeks ago) complete system failure, NOTHING worked.
Vista express upgrade: I got screwed by acer...
    unit age: 10 months

this is after hundreds of hours on the phone with a real jerk who kept contradicting himself on the phone, told me the only thing they would do is repair it... called me a liar, said that I did not warrent a replacement. and a huge amount of other s**t.

    compared to HP:
repair #1: Disk drive failure, 3 days including shipping...
support people were nice I never waited on hold for more than 5 mins.
for support you can't get much better...

    Thanks for the props TeeJay!

I believe Acer is moving in the right direction, and can become a force to reckon with in the laptop industry, even more so, if the buyout of Gateway (& Packard Bell) goes as planned. New products look great (5920), still a awesome value, market share & name recogontion expanding, I feel great things are in store for Acer.
