Hi all,
I'm new to laptop and I am considering the ACER Portable Aspire 1362WLMi.
Is it a good choice ?
And I have another question is there a big difference between 4200 trs and 5400 ? Is it worth investing an extra 100-200 $ ?
Thanks Mik

First, you need to tell us what you're going to be using the notebook for, and try to be specific (apps, games, etc..)?
- This unit has an AMD CPU which is not the best for battery life. This will give you approx 3hrs (max) of battery life, but I'd expect an actual runtime of approx 2.5hrs or less. If you plan on being mobile a lot, you'd want battery power.
- The unit weighs almost 8lbs (7.9lbs). This is quite heavy. Again, not a good idea for being mobile.
- It utilizes a UniChrome Pro IGP graphics card, it will not provide a lot of graphics processing power. This is not a good choice if you plan on playing the lastest games (Doom 3, HL2, Far Cry, ect...). You're gonna want something with dedicated video memory.
What is your price range for a notebook (please convert to US or CDN dollars)? This unit is mainly a low cost system that will give you decent features, but minimal overall.
You may want to take a look at the Acer Aspire 1681WLMi or the Acer Travelmate 4501WLMi. These are generally the exact same systems, except that the Aspire is designed for home use (XP Home), while the Travelmate is more for office/enterprise usage (XP Pro). The 1681 has a small battery which only give approx 2.5hrs of runtime and the 4501 has a 5hr battery. You should be able to get a 4000 series battery and use it in the 1681 since they're the same design. This will give you approx 5hrs of runtime. These units go for approx $1300 & $1400US respectively. There have been a lot of users who have bought these units and if you do have any questions on these units, I'm sure they'll be more the happy to answer them for you.
Regarding the HDD. You will see a noticable difference between a 4200rpm HDD and a 5400rpm HDD. You'll get faster load times at bootup and when apps load. Overall, your system will seem much faster with the faster HDD. You will also not notice any drop in battery life with the faster drive. Same goes for noise, they're fairly quiet. You may even want to get it aftermarket, it may be cheaper. You might even be able to pickup a 7200rpm HDD which will show a massive speed difference between a 4200rpm HDD.
