Hello, I recently acquired the Acer Aspire 5043 model with reference number: LX.ADX05.014. It comes with a preinstalled ATI X200M video card that has 64 mb, dedicated memory and can share up to 128mb. My question is regarding to the addition of another video card, since the Acer comes already with an IGP card is there any slots either on the video card or on the mother board where I could install a PCI card, say an ATI X1800. If there are expansion slots I would like to know which video cards are compatible with this notebook. I also understand that the Aspire 5043 come with 1 interface for display / video - VGA - 15 pin HD D-Sub (HD-15); I was wondering what this port can be used for, if I can install another graphic card here, and if so which ones are compatible with it? Thanks for your time.

Unfortunately, for notebooks, except for high end machines and proprietary Dell machines, the GPU is stuck on, and not upgradable.

Unless you physically modify the motherboard, but even then.....really complicated.

Not only does it have to fit, it has tohave enough voltage to run, have enough room to be ventulated and then there is BIOs, and all that jazz. If you are willing to do such an commitment to that, then by all means go ahead! It'll be quite interesting as well.

What would the process of modyfing the motherboard be like? The motherboard in these types of laptop doesn't come with any other places to introduce an extra graphics card? What does this "interface for display / video - VGA - 15 pin HD D-Sub (HD-15)" refer too? If then the only way to update the video card in the future would be to buy a new laptop?

    Thanks for your patience.
