does your network have encryption enalbled in the ROUTER?? like WEP or WPA?? (did you set it up yourself)??

there are MANY possible NETWORK ISSUES THAT COULD CAUSE THAT..

do the network adapters show up in the device manager?? without yellow !!! marks??

what models of WIFI and ETHERNET (wired) network adapters are listend in the device manager?

could you let us know what router/switch settings you have changed.
have you tried just doing a restart with the cable in.
is Upnp switched on in the router and the laptop ?

EDIT: BigO, do you need lunch manager for Ethernet to work. im sure you don't.

    you need more ram/memory :D

you need all the drivers for other devices.which could well be all your internet cards Ethernet/wifi and your modem.
or more commonly known as Network Controlers :D

Go into device manager, if it is not already installed, you should see Ethernet Device....something in Unknown Devices..
Right click, reinstall driver....guide the windows device installer to the location of the INF where you downloaded that LAN driver and install by pressing Next..!!

this sounds a bit harsh but. have you got any data that you need ?
have you tried system restore in windows ?
or you could do a complete fresh install of xp.
move all your important files over to the D: drive if you have one. Then do a clean install of XP.

something is eating your drivers lol :D

From the looks of it, you still have to install the chipset driver and SD card storage driver, apart from wireless and LAN....
I dont get it, what is actually the problem here..?? :D
