Hi,
Be Warned if you want to record using Line-in and Mic-in....
I bought an ACER ASPIRE AS5672wlmi (80Gb HD/1Gb memory) unit from Comet UK, in late August. This was to be used as a "music" centre for connection to HiFi, Keyboards and midi controllers.
It now appears that there is a hardware fault in this ACER laptop. It is shown most easily in the Control Panel Sounds & Audio dialogue and Realtex application (mixer tab). In both these dialogues the record levels are either disabled or greyed out or not present (see the attached images).
Finally both Comet UK and ACER UK have acknowledged that this is a hardware fault. However, COMET, UK are still selling the same model (and in Bristol, Cribbs Causeway branch it also has the same fault). I also got them to test several other similar ACER models and out of three only one (the cheapest) didn't have the problem). I don't believe that these goods are fit for the purpose for which they were sold. The "fault" was present at the time of sale and hadn't developed since purchase. COMET, UK have since been a PITA.
On Monday night the the Sales staff/Customer support team offered to replace the unit (although it is more than 28 days since purchased) if it was proven to be a hardware fault (it was). Today Comet refused to replace the unit and insisted that it be returned for repair. (if it can be?). I begrugenly went along with this.
However, they were still selling the same unit (with the same fault) even though all the staff I spoke to are fully aware of this problem (fraud?)
The Installation and configuration of all the software has taken a considerable investment in time. The final test requried by ACER UK was to run the system recovery and revert back to "factory default" installation in case it was a software issue. But after this it still had the problem. It was at this stage that they acknowledged there is a hardware fault. This all took a week.
The bottom line: I like the unit! The only reason I wanted to exchange it was to get a similar ACER model that worked, they have a lot of bang per buck. But I do feel let down by Comet, UK.
But, be warned if you want to use an ACER (models in Comet other than AS5672wlmi showed similar problems) for either LINE-IN or MIC-IN recording then it may be worthwhile checking whether you also have this fault.

These functions work on my 5102WLMi. Also in Realtek Sound Manager the line volume, mic volume and stereo mix sliders all work.

Hi, mine is fine too, if I was you I would deal with Acer repair Centre directly and bypass Comet. However you will still get a repair not a replacement...

Hi,
// mine is fine too //
What model is yours 5102 or 5672? You'd make my day if it was a 5672! ;-)
