That's what the guy I talked to said. Told him if he had any 2012s, he said they had been discontinued and replaced by the 1681, which as basically all the same features, similar looks and some upgrades like the Dothan rather than Banias Pentium M.

Now, lets look at the two differences that I've come across so far.

    1) Chassis. It's similar, but is it better? worse? Is the silver Aluminum casing?

2)I heard that it has a 4-cell battery, and 2.5 hours (half of the 2012).

I heard from another thread that the 8-cell is supposed to be available in the US in a couple of months.

Is it available now in ANY store? would it be possible to ship one from the UK or Europe?

Any other things I should know about the 1681 compared to the 2012?

I'm thinking of buying this one as a good replacement for the 2012, as that's not in stock anymore anywhere.

    thanx

    Romulus,

The 1681 may be similarly spec'd to the 2012, but the battery life is a definite disapointment. As Hoopsallusionz indicated, you may want to look at the 4501WLMi instead. This comes closer to matching overall specs. Although the HDD is smaller, has XP Pro & costs a bit more, I still think this is a better match.

    1. Generally, the casing should be about the same. It's not aluminum, only the 2025 is aluminum.

    2. Yes, the 4 cell battery is just pur crap. There was talk of an 8 cell coming to Canada/US, but nothing yet.

    3. You probably get one from Europe, but the taxes/duties/customs fees/shipping costs for this, might make it unreasonable.

about the battery, are all Acer batteries specifically designed for a single laptop?

Will a 2012 or 2003 battery not work on a 1681? they are both Pentium Ms...

also, if I get one form Europe, will it be compatible with a US model 1681?

lastly, if it's not aluminum, what's the silver casing made of? is it pretty cheap stuff? is it robust?

    thanx
