What's the big deal with this laptop? I'd seen several reviews by users who are happy but also many who complain about the heat generated by this machine. Some even complain that this laptop stutters or crashes when running a 3D game because of the high temperature. I'm considering buying this laptop, but these concerns really makes you think twice. Any comments?

Yea I'm seriously contemplating getting this laptop too and was also investigating the extent and seriousness of the heat issue with this notebook. From what I understand it seems like while it does get hot, it doesn't too hot to the point where it affects performance. Also, there was a thread about a 5672/x1600 user removing a black film strip which was blocking the air vents in the machine, and this seemed to help lower the temperature of the notebook.

Well lets see acer packed a core duo powerful cpu, strong x1600 gpu, 5400rpm 120gb HDD and all the usual bells and whistles including bluetooth and more; all in a 1in or less base. Thats alot of stuff going on and tons of power in such a small cramped area. So I dont complain about it gettin warm, when in fact it doesnt get any warmer then other laptops Ive owned in the past. As far as gaming and crashing I have done soem seriouse all day gaming as well as heavy multitasking without a notebook cooler and never a sign of slowdown or crashing. Now if you were to use this lappy in a REAlly hot room with little to no circulation and have the vents all block(using on the carpet or bed) and have the exhaust vent blocked as well then yes I could see things over heating. Other then user error, a lemon is what comes to mind.
But come on people take things with a grain of salt, acer packed alot of stuff and power in a thin lappy. So it wont run ice cold....the saying "you cant have your cake and eat it too" comes to mind. Warm/hot and laptops go hand in hand. -
As liquidxit2 said, there's a lot of hardware in the very little real estate, so it is expected to get warm...even a little more so when I upgraded the RAM to 2Gb and slapped in a PCMCIA Audigy card (that card gets wicked hot)!
I was able to play Counterstrike Source while using an external monitor (not playing on both, just using the lappy monitor to play and watching MLB Game Cast on the other)and it ran just fine.
HOWEVER, I am using a lappy cooler from Vantec as a precaution...
I was in the same boat as you guys when I read the horror stories about how hot this thing gets, but it wasn't nearly as hot as I thought it would be...I guess it's subjective as I haven't had a gaming laptop to compare it to, for all I know...this is normal. -
So which would you guys pick the Acer AS5672 or HGL30, or even A96j. Those are my final 3 picks. The Acer laptop is a great deal, provided it works well.

I've been in the same boat as you (acer 5672 x1600 or s96j) for the past month and a half. The s96j has 256mb video ram instead of 128 like the acer, has slightly better build quality, and runs cooler. The acer is $200-$275 dollars cheaper, has bluetooth, dvi out, s video, bluetooth, slot loading 120gb hard drive, better keyboard, and still has comparable video performance with its 128mb x1600.
Since I'm strapped for cash, I'll probably go with the acer, but you can't go wrong with either. -
Well if you have the money go for the beefier x1600. But if it is too much of a stretch then go for the acer. I have yet to find a game I cant play on max settings(no I havent tried oblivion, nor will I).

yea i just got my acer today and was quite dissapointed. i was looking foward to this lappy for the past 2 weeks. when it came the dvd drive was not working. disk would not go in. little bit ghosting on bottom. and it idles at 67 for the cpu and 40 for the hd. i will put the ramsinks in when i get this thing replaced. overall i really like this lappy.

dont get me wrong. this is a great laptop if u can ignore these issues. for me its no big deal. just the dvd drive not wrong, but that does not happan much i guess. as for the black film that goes over th vent. the black film is blocking it because it draws air over the the chips towards the back. if u remove the film the chips will get extremly hot. that is what they said in the heat issue thread.
they also said that the touch pad and the keyboard gets hot, but it does not get hot at all for me. just a little warm. like any other laptop.
the only reason im dissapointed is the heat and the broken dvd drive. the heat i can understand because this laptop is packed with some high end components.
once again if u can get over the laptop getting hot. then this laptop is a great buy.
if u wanna noe what temps i get just lmk. i would be glad to help.
AS5672WLMi-ATI X1600 running hot!
