Before you spend any money think if it wouldn't be cheaper to buy a new notebook (with Win 7 already on board) and new CPU & GPU which would be even faster than upgraded 6920G. Especially if you consider the cost of Win 7, new GPU and possibly new CPU.
I'm not saying it's not worth it- just make a calculation.

And you could also sell your 6920G if you get a new computer.

I was looking for updated video drivers from nvidia for the GeForce 9500M GS, and I saw the newest 260.99 WHQL, but when I checked compatibility, it stated 9500M GS as one of the exceptions, so I'm not sure whether I should install it or not. If not, what would you suggest I update the driver to?

Exceptions are on the very bottom of the page and read:
Everything above is what's supported and that includes 9500M GS.

Was able to install 260.99 a while ago; reverted back to 257.21, though.
@ninja: That shouldn't be the case - the Vertex 2 SSD is a SATA drive, and should be able to fit perfectly into where the hard drive was. Pictures or a better description of how it doesn't fit might help us figure out what to do.

Thanks for the reply. Im uploading an image now for you to see and help me.
Thep problem is that at the rear of the ssd where the connections are, its identical, but the connections in my current hard drive have a cut space on both above and below where it fits perfectly in the laptop. The ssd on the otherhand has a space cut from only one side.
Both pics are from my ssd. As you can see there is a gap only on the bottom.

My hard drive looks more or less the same - the SATA plug shouldn't have any problems sliding into the drive, it's a standard connector. Anyone else want to chime in?

A vertex 2E slid right into my 5935g (with the adaptor and caddy moved over), comparing the vertex 2E to my mechanical seagate 250GB 5400.4 shows the interfaces to be identical.

Remember there might be an adaptor plugged into the original drive and a caddy to hold it. Both would need to be moved over, if the end of your mecanical drive does not look like your vertex drive then see if you can pull some kind of adaptor out.

EDIT: Ah I remember now, see the casing above the interface? that got in the way on my old 6935G, if there are cables nearby make sure they are not getting caught, you might have to give it a bit of a push.

Yeah there were also two clips guiding cables (for the wifi) I think I bent them upwards ever so slightly which made the SSD fit snugly.

What looks to have happened is HDD manufacturers and notebook manufactueres had an unwritten rule that the space above the interface of the 2.5" drives was kept clear.

However when the SSD manufacturers came in they followed the spec exactly which makes a box shape.

I wish i saw this last night!!!!!
I finally managed to install the ssd afterall.

How this is done, as Meaker also suggested is that there are some clips behind the hard disc connection that hold two wires. Those 3 clips, 2 on the top and one below can be removed (broken off). I dont know about Meaker's suggestion to bend them, mine could not be bend. But it would be wiser just to bend them rather than breaking them off. After you do that, then the ssd goes in like a charm. In addition, the current hard drive had a aluminium casing which i thought it would be wise to add to the ssd as well.

Thank you all so much for your help.
Im glad the ssd is now installed and with Windows 7 64-bit i already see a vast improvement in my system. Everything runs so smooth now.

    P.S

HOLY COW!!!! Extracted 2GBs in less than 1.5 min!!!

Normally, the hard drive is the slowest component of the laptop (aside from the person using it). You swap it with an SSD, and all of a sudden your system takes a level in Epic.

I'm hesitant to make the move to an SSD myself - I just upgraded the hard drive earlier this year.
However, my next machine will probably be SSD-equipped.

Hey guys, I put up a standalone post here:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/533006-acer-6920-vidock-attempted.html

about doing a DIY Vidock with an Acer 6920. I have been kicking the idea around in my head for a few months and since Black Friday/November is nearly here it may be the perfect time to try it out. For any unaware the full guide by Nanda/MoralHazard is here:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/gaming-software-graphics-cards/418851-diy-vidock-experiences.html

I just want to ask anyone here with a 6920 if they have advice to a newbie trying it/have tried it themselves and have feedback. I plan to use a GTX 460 1 GB card with the Expresscard adaptor method (PE4L).

    Cheers.

Hey fellow 6920(G) users, not so long ago my Aspire 6920G stopped reading blu-ray discs. It's not the discs that are the issue though as they work on my younger brothers PS3. Also My bluetooth will receive items from my phone [occasionally] to my laptop - but I can't do it the other way round. Also whenever I click the bluetooth button it asks for me to install the drivers and that there is no Bluetooth perepheral device or something. I have tried downloading the bluetooth drivers from the Acer website abut that did not fix the problem and I have no idea as to where to start with it not reading blu-ray discs.

Anyone know how to resolve these issues? ( :

Welcome to the forums, PDZ1! We'll continue your discussion over here instead of the topic you made - please refrain from double-posting and cross-posting.

Does the 6920G still read DVDs and CDs? Do you have Blu-ray playback software on your system (Acer Arcade Deluxe, Corel WinDVD, Cyberlink PowerDVD, ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre)?
If the answers are both "yes," then try cleaning the Blu-ray laser's lens with a microfibre cloth. If that doesn't work, it's possible your Blu-ray drive's broken.

What Bluetooth drivers are you installing - the Vista or Windows 7 ones? Try the other of the two, since Windows 7 will happily use Vista drivers.

    Friends,

I have a 6920G machine, a great one. Unfortunately it stopped working a couple of months back. My run around with Acer service support in chennai, India havent yielded any result.

the Service centers came back and said that the mother board needs to replaced

Do you know which Acer office in India (?) can get a service solution for this?

Hey guys, im a proud owner of an Acer Aspire 6920g, with a T8100 processor, a sh***y little 9500M Graphics, and 4 gigs ram. You guys know the game, COD black ops right ? Well, i bought it and my processor is just under the requirements, therefore creating lag. I was wondering if the Q9000 Cor 2 Quad was compatible with the 6920G, ANyone have any experience ? I would love to hear.
    Cheers.

    ninjainthemaking -

I played COD black ops on my 6920g, but the fps is horrible. It because of the processor we have. I have a T8100, which is clocked at 2.1G, and the minimun requirement for COD is 2.9G. Everything else in our machine is compatible - assuming you have 4 gigs of ram and a crap nvidia Geforce 9500M

Thank you TehSuigi! I apologise about the double posting though! >.<

Erm....yeah, I do still have Acer Arcade Deluxe and normal DVDs do still work on it. I'll try the cleaning see if that helps any! When it started though was after I did a recovery and wiped everything..so I thought maybe my laptop screwed itself over and didn't install it's drivers correctly or something but on the Acer website there isn't anything about drivers for getting the Blu-ray to work so maybe it is ust broke. -.-

Erm as to the Bluetooth it is Windows Vista ones, I'm still with Windows Vista. Any other suggestions? :)

    Thanks for the help! :D

@youngjaebo: Welcome to the forums! Unfortunately, the Q9000 requires a different chipset than the one inside your 6920G - the fastest CPU you'll be able to get is the Core 2 Duo T9500 at 2.6 GHz, which beats the minimum requirement of a Core 2 Duo E6600 (2.4 GHz desktop model). You could also look into upgrading to a T8300 (2.4 GHz) or T9300 (2.5 GHz) if you can't find a T9500 cheap enough, and consider swapping your 9500M GS (which you apparently hate enough to bypass our swear filter) for a Radeon HD 4670; check the Acer MXM thread for details on that.

Of course, for the cost of those upgrades, I'd humbly suggest getting a desktop computer; you'll be able to get a faster machine without spending so much.

@PDZ1: Ah - you might need to ensure you've got WHQL-certified audio and video drivers. If those don't exist, your system won't play Blu-ray discs. Check to see if the disc shows up in Windows Explorer - that'll help ascertain whether it's a lens issue or a driver/software problem.

Tehsuigi, thank you for the help again. Erm...the disc does not show up in windows explorer, it's as if nothing has been put into the laptop. So that means it's the lens then?

Sounds like it - I'm having the same problem with my drive, but it's with a single disc. Since I'm still under warranty, I'm getting the drive replaced. See if you can find an IDE Blu-ray drive on eBay for replacement - I believe it'll be the BC-5500A if you want the same model as you have now, or the UJ-120 something.

Possible - there may be room in the chassis, but not room near the connector.
Only one way to find out!

Also, I just did a clean install on my laptop; be advised that Realtek audio driver version 2.55 breaks the Tuba again. I'm back on the 2.02 they've got posted on Acer's website.

    Bump and update.
    1. Finally resolved my Blu-ray reading issue; you'll note that my Optiarc BC-5500A is now a Panasonic UJ-120. :)
    2. And for some reason between my most recent clean install and today, Nvidia driver 260.99 lost its ability to accelerate 1080p H.264 videos through DXVA. 260.89 was the same way, so I'm back on 257.21.

hey guys is the heat sink meant to be screwed on tightly to the cpu and gpu

I cleaned out the dust (there was a lot) but now my laptop shuts down even more frequently than when it had dust..(lol)

I know im getting wrong temperature readings now with softwares because its constant and does not deviate at all. And when i start throttle stop it shuts down much quicker and much more easily (even if im not gaming).

Is there a way the fan is meant to fit. i checked and it works..so im really lost right now

E: while all this was going on i also did a bios upgrade 1.06 to 1.20
Is it possible that its the bios

E: the fan also runs (quite a bit of noise) on high frequently

Wrong topic Hamzie - this is for the 6920(G), not the 6935G.
That being said, let's examine what's going on here.

The heatsink is meant to be screwed on tightly with a very thin layer of thermal compound connecting it to the CPU/GPU (the compound facilitates heat transfer better than just air and regular contact).

Shutting down does denote a serious thermal problem - using ThrottleStop prevents the first kind of thermal protection from activating, resulting in the more drastic solution of powering down.

The BIOS would only cause a problem if you cross-flashed from a different machine type onto yours; that'd explain the epic misreading of temperatures.

did you open the case to find out exactly what was making the noise?

    Nope, still working just fine.
I wasn't able to decipher exactly what was making the noise, but pushing down on the hub of the fan (yes, stopping it temporarily) seemed to clear it up.

sorry i cannot read the whole thread, why exactly did you request the unlock?
and you are asking if it is safe? of course its not safe, its a modded bios. it is possible it will brick your laptop.
but... for a good enough reason, most regulars on here will give it a try ;-)

    Hi,

I just wanted to post a quick update that the modded bios does work. I have flashed the bios and it is working perfectly fine. There is now a whole load of new options in the bios that I don't even know half of them  Will go through them later.

Most importantly though, EIST is already disabled and I have overclocked using dual-IDA mode in throttlestop to reach 2.8ghz (stock 2.6ghz).

So go ahead and flash already! ;)

Hello people, new to the forum. Been reading around and found some good information on upgrading. I would like to ask about upgrading my 6920g.

I'm having problems with playing css at the minute. Ive done everything known to anyone trying to fix the lag i get ingame. the lag started after reinstalling windows xp one day. Before that the game worked flawlessly, so im assuming VALVE are at fault. After the reinstall i installed the latest drivers and everything was the same as before the reinstall of windows. The lag starts around 5 minutes into playing the game.

I then installed vista and still the same problem.
I have tested cpu and gpu temperatures, updated bios, done everything to be honest.

I want to upgrade my ram and graphics card, and maybe cpu.
I have seen various threads on here, but would like fresh opionions.
I want the best i can get.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

If you truly want the best you can get.....

    Buy a new machine.

Seriously. The 6920G has very limited options that are going to see a nice increase.

    SAYING THAT HOWEVER.

Have you cleaned out your heatsinks? It could be that the re-install had nothing to do with it.

Have you use a program like GPU-Z to monitor your GPU temps when gaming? Also your CPU temps with core temp?

Also when you say lag, do you mean lag or you get low frame rates.

Its possible to be playing with silky smooth frame rates on a 500ms ping and have horrendous lag while you can play on slightly slow 30FPS but only have a 20ms ping and so no real lag.

Ring69, the first post in that BIOS editing topic has links to a few crisis discs and how to use 'em.
This intrigues me, but I'm not that interested in potentially bricking my laptop just to get an additional 200 MHz out of my CPU.

@lizzardos: Wait wait wait...you can see your BIOS with a 9600M GT in your 6920G? When did that happen, and what did you do?
Oh, and please post back with what those nifty BIOS options do. :)

    hi xD
ya, i am a bit afraid and all LOL, but it could be good, to get the max performance on the laptop. The problema is that i don´t have warranty xD and i have already kill me old pc, it was not a bios upgrade ok ahahhah

The other problem is that my battery is dead, and i am afraid that by checking for the battery, it could give me a bad flash .

I would love to buy a new machine to be honest, i'l have to start saving. I cant afford it really.

I havent cleaned out the heatsinks. I know its not the reinstall of windows thats causing the problem. I have used GPU-Z and CPU to monitor while gaming, temps are fine, core 1 and 2 only go to 48 Oc and GPU goes to 58-60. So definately not over heating.

Ive tried everything in the book apart from cleaning the heatsinks or replacing hardware.

I mean lag as in low FPS, not connection related. I connect to a server play away, then 5 mins later the fps drops to 10-30. This is causing performance laggs, where i just cant play the game properly.

What tpye of ram can i buy to put in my lappy, and what is the maximum amount of ram i go too on this machine.
I not asking cause i think it will sort the problem. I just want more ram and a better GPU atleast lol.
