Thanks for the PM, but due to my noob-ness status :p , I'm still yet to be able to receive or send PM's atm. However I managed to pry open the back panel, and saw a series of wires extending from behind the heatsink up to centre of the motherboard (near the battery terminal) I guess that must be the wires leading to the AC adapter port. So, do I have to remove the heatsink to gain access? *sigh* unfortunately I don't have my TIM's and some other tools with me so further dismantling have to wait :(

hi everyone great forum BTW. anyways i need some help as i wanna do some upgrades to my 6920G. from reading around my best bet for upgrading the video card is a HD 4670 right? as for processor i can't decide between T8100, T8300, T9300, T9500. what are there going prices at the moment? because i can't seem to get them from newegg and if i look on eBay a new T8300 cost about $175 while i can get a new T9500 for $200 so for $25 difference it is worth upgrading to the best. anyone know cheaper places to buy the processor from?

and also very important about 2 years ago my screen cracked and i've had to use my laptop to my HDTV this whole time but i'm planning on traveling soon and will need to replace the screen. i need to locate the screen replacement. mine is the Full HD one not the low end one. i believe it is called WUXGA. anyways i need a price range and the difficulty of doing it myself. two years ago i called around and got quoted for $300 installed but i wanna try and do it myself and save from having someone install it for me. also i wanna upgrade my ram from 3gb to 4 gb so i need some prices. i found a G.Skill brand on newegg for $76 shipped but it sounds like alot of money for upgrading just 1gb doesn't it. anyways help is gladly appreciated.

Edit: I found a retail T9300 (not ES) for $155 shipped. it is used. should i get it? i think it looks like a good deal. what do u guys think?

    Welcome to the forums, wilmer007!

The Radeo HD 4670 is indeed the best MXM-II card out there; MXM-Upgrade.com has a boatload of them, and tested on the 6920G too!
Newegg won't carry mobile CPUs, as far as I know, so eBay's your best shot.

When I bought my T8300, it was $200, and the T9300 was $50 more, with the T9500 even higher than that.
$25 for the extra 200 MHz and 3 MB of cache...hm. That's a judgment call on your part; I'm quite happy with how my T8300 has handled.
    (but that retail T9300 for $155? No-brainer)

Screen replacements are tricky; you're correct that WUXGA=Full HD 1080p, but I'm afraid I don't know the price of the part.

There's no need to look for a matched pair of 2GB RAM modules - you only need the one to replace the 1GB in your system. As long as they're the same speed, RAM modules from different companies will happily work together.

    Welcome, wilmer007!

Get that T9300 STAT. I don't think you will find a better deal for that performance upgrade.

Hello, I'm Italian and I apologize in advance for my bad english (this is a great forum!) I'm looking for a ATI Mobility Radeon 4650 or a 4670 (hard to find) for my Acer Aspire 6920g, could you tell me kindly what model of spare parts should I buy the VG.M9606.005 or the VG.M9606.006?
What Acer notebook have this card?
I tried to contact mxm-upgrade.com for the 4670 but their e-mail doesn't work, you know if they sell more graphics cards? if they sell yet, what are their times?

Thanks so much for your help guys!

    Hello aleweiss!

I've got the spare part numbers you're looking for over in the Acer MXM thread; both the .005 and .006 are MXM-II, and theoretically should work.

Those cards were originally found in a late-model Acer Aspire 6930G; it took a while for a few daring users to stuff them into 5920Gs, 6920Gs, etc.

Surprised MXM-Upgrade.com's email address isn't working; I'll message the owner of the website (who posts here under the name Ice-Tea) to visit this topic and reach you.

thanks man i saw alot of your guides great work BTW. anyways at the moment i'm a little strapped for cash so i have to get either the video card upgrade or the processor which should i get as priority #1? i say the processor over the video card. am i correct? also yeah after the post i realized i could just buy a 2GB ram instead of 4gb. i found one on newegg for $30 shipped for a 2gb so i'm gonna order that in a few seconds. how much performance increase will a notice with a 1gb upgrade? oh yeah i forgot to mention i'm running the T5550 processor. i forgot to mention that in the previous post. also seeing as this will be a $40 upgrade would i be better off doing a desktop build instead? i mean for $400 for a processor and video card i can probably build a desktop better than what the 6920g can at max. when my laptop had a working screen i would use it occasionally on the go i would say it was 90% home and 10% on the go. so yeah i know i pretty much answered my own question but i just wanna make sure. i mean when i travel it wouldn't kill me to stick to the stock config for casual gaming to kill time when i'm not at home.

$400 will certainly get you a better PC than your 6920G - desktops as a rule are more powerful per dollar than a notebook. AMD CPU + ATI GPU = gaming on the cheap.

As for the performance upgrade from 3GB to 4GB, you probably won't see much. But if you ever DO go over 3GB of RAM usage, trust me, you'll be happy. You might also want to look into a 64-bit version of Windows so you can use all 4GB.

Between the CPU and GPU...I went for the CPU when I did (November '08) because the Radeon HD 4650 wasn't out back then, and I was doing an awful lot of video encoding. Roll with the GPU, because that is almost always the bottleneck when gaming.

(and for future reference, add some line breaks in your posts! really helps with readability)

TehSuigi Many thanks for your help, you're really great. Until now I have your same configuration for my 6920G, but I can't do less than 1.13 undervolt otherwise blue screen and restart.....
    I hope soon to install a 4650 or 4670....
    thanks again

Every CPU has a different limit for undervolting; it's just due to the production process. I've even seen some T8300s that can go all the way down to 0.9V!

has anyone been able to connect the 6920g to a home theater system? freaking drivers only allow for 2 channel. does anyone have it connected through the Digital Output and what cable did you use for it. i tried a coax (audio) and got nothing. i'm tired of using my SR807 with All Chan Stereo (2 channels) all the time.

I used an optical cable through the headphones/SPDIF port, and was able to transmit Dolby and DTS signals to my receiver without any problems.
The optical cable needs a TOSLINK-to-miniTOSLINK adapter to fit into the headphones port, btw.
You might also need to adjust your media player's settings to simply send the Dolby and DTS streams to your receiver instead of trying to decode it on-computer.

That looks like the one, wilmer!
My cable is transparent, with TOSLINK on both ends; like I said, I use a TOSLINK-to-Mini adapter to connect.

And after a quick Google search, this should link up easy with your Onkyo SR807. Just keep in mind that it'll only transmit regular Dolby and DTS streams. If you want lossless audio (DTS-HD MA, Dolby TrueHD), you'll need to send the sound over HDMI; and if you desire 5.1 sound when there's no Dolby/DTS stream, pick the Dolby Digital Live 5.1 output option in the Digital Output's properties window.

yeah i actually want DTS-HD MA and True HD and i have it plugged in through HDMI right now but like i said the stupid drivers don't give me the 5.1 option when using HDMI. Do you have any idea how to fix it because i have looked everywhere for a solution. i wanted to use toslink because i can't get 5.1 through HDMI to work.

Not sure if the drivers are the ones to yield the option for 5.1: again, if you're outputting a Dolby or DTS stream, it should be transmitted automatically.

Plug your 6920G into the receiver, and pick HDMI Output as your default playback device. Then open up the properties, tab over to Supported Formats, and post a screencap of that window. Maybe it'll help us decipher what the donkeynuts is going on.

I don't think HDMI on a computer can output more than 2 channels of digital audio (unless we're talking an uncompressed 5.1 LPCM audio stream from a video); if you want 5.1 sound, tab over to Advanced in the HDMI properties window, and change Default Format from 2 channel to Dolby Digital Live 5.1. That will encode whatever you're doing to a 640kbps Dolby Digital stream in real-time.

EDIT: And have you checked that AC3filter isn't interfering? I don't use it myself, but that might be involved somehow.

hmm i tried both of these and wow now my NR807 is displaying Dolby Digital and not All Chan Stereo. So it looks like i got it working now. Thanks you are the man

So now if i pop in a blu ray that uses True HD the 807 will be decoding it and not the laptop?

Bingo! Acer Arcade Deluxe should detect you're outputting via HDMI and simply pass-through the TrueHD signal.
If not, there may be an option or two to tweak in there (ditto if you're using a different piece o' software).
Best to give it a shot and report back here. Ditto for testing DTS and DTS-HD MA.

Do you got link to download Acer Arcade Deluxe since i don't have it so i can test?

I used Power DVD 10 earlier and while it did not allow me to display True HD on my AVR (used The Dark Knight to test) if i looked at the information it was saying it was transmitting in True HD. i however want to get it to say on my AVR.

Apparently you need PowerDVD 10 Ultra 3D in order to get Dolby TrueHD support; not sure if that's the version you have.

Arcade Deluxe was pre-loaded onto your system; it should be on the Drivers & Applications disc if you burned it through eRecovery.
Otherwise, get it here, and be ready to update it about five times. :p

    EDIT: Whoop, I missed this.

Hello from a newby here. Grandsons Aspire 6920G refused to read any cd/dvd making the DVD drive somwhat useless. Looking at hardware manager showed the drive to be working ok but it still failed to read any disk. I removed the drive to check the flexible cable but nothing seemed amiss so simply refitted it. Machine kept locking up every time I tried reading a movie disk. I assumed at this stage that a new drive was required but the costs of the replacement BC-5500A BD ROM DVD/CD drive was rather expensive so I considered buying a Sony slim dvd/cd drive. However as a last resort I removed the existing drive from the system using hardware manager before restarting the computer. Bingo - the drive was reinstalled with drivers automatically and has now been working like a dream for the past few hours. Not a hardware fault at all but obviously something had gone wrong with the drivers. Does this sound ok for a fix.

hi, the world of windows drivers moves in mysterious ways...
can also happen with removable drives and other stuff. remove driver if possible then the typical IT support soultion of ''turn it off, turn it on''
still possible it was hardware but if it works ok now then alls good, you know what to do next time :D

Hi have just installed windows 7Ultim together with the drivers available for win7U from acer driver site. The webcam did not work untill I installed both the Chicony Camera utility Crystal Eye driver and Suyin Camera utility Crystal Eye from my orig vista drivers. the volume touch pad seems to be abit laggy shall I use the one that came with the laptop?

Also when I plug in the hdmi cable to tv visual auto detects but the audio does not. Im trying to get it to auto detect like it does on my brothers Aspire 4820TG. any help would be most appreciated

edit- I was told that this laptop had space for a second hardrive, how do I access it?

Odd - my camera worked without any additional drivers. Guess it's a different model of webcam than yours.
What do you mean, "auto-detect"? Do you mean the audio does not automatically switch to the TV?
And you were lied to - this 6920G does not have room for a second hard drive, unless you were willing to remove the optical drive. Acer's online specs are wrong; the service guide has it right.

No room for second hard drive shame, would have been great.

I don't think you can automatically switch the audio, but you can make the swap manually.
Right-click on your Volume icon, and pick Playback devices. Then, select the Realtek HDMI Output and pick Set Default. That should get your audio going through the TV. Feel free to double-click on Realtek HDMI Output and have a look at all the options in there, too.

Tehsuigi, i've got a big problem here. Since a couple of week, one of my game began to be slower than it was. I first tought it was only bad update, but it stayed that way, whatever I tried. Out of solution, I tried a complete format and reinstalation of windows 7. I think now it's worst.
I did a 3dmark06 test to see if it was only the game or all of my computer. It looks very bad. I think in the past I had around 3500 mark at stock, but now I have around 2700. I compared my cpu score with another intel core 2 duo 2GHz, and I had less than half the other guy score. Graphic was around the same score.
Could the cpu be damaged? If so, any way I could be sure of that?

Edit: I forgot throttlestop. Mark is more normal, still a bit lower, but my gameis really more playable. From 10 FPS to 40 :D

Yea, but, no. Now when I play the computer shut down by itself. I had a fan over it and the laptop seemed to be cool. But 2d I can heard some strange noise coming from the fan. Maybe it didn't work and since no air was blown I could feel it hot. I'll disassemble it 2d, hope I can fix that.

Oh, never mind then. If the computer's shutting off by itself, then it actually is a thermal issue. I'd crack that thing open and clean out your fan exhaust, air intake, etc.
I had a strange noise emit from my fan (like water bubbling actually, close to that of a hard drive), but after pressing on the fan's center, it fixed itself. My dad thinks the bearings are coming loose.

I don't think that it uses a ball bearing fan... I'm almost sure that it is a electomagnetic fan (cheaper). To test if a fan is a ball bearing one, if you spin it, it should slow down gradually and slowly until it stops. If it is slow down and stops abruptly it is a electromagnetic one.

There was a lot of dust in there. I tested a game and it seems ok. But i'm buying a new computer for sure on the boxing day, just in case something more serious happens soon. I saw some wonderfull deals last year and I don't want to miss them this year. And like you would have guessed, it probably won't be an acer.

Have you ever tried to hold an compressed duster upside-down? That thing is damn cold XD.

Yes I have, matmat07. Even accidentally had some of the air-juice leak onto the table when I was cleaning my system.

    Hello there!!!

This is my first post here so please excuse me from any rookie mistakes.
I would like to ask your opinon on several questions i have.
Im thinking of upgrading my AS6920G with Windows 7 home premium and an OCZ ssd hard drive.
My first question is that can i actually upgrade this laptop with an ssd?
The second question, will it be better to install a 64bit version of win7 or a 32bit one? All the programs i usually use are 64bit compatible so thats not an issue for me. Lastly, as ive seen from Acer's website, the most important drivers are avaliable for Win7 but the thing i worry is that i dont see any powermanagement avaliable. Do you actually get to see the battery remaning icon and be able to change through various settings? (ie balanced, perfomance etc)

Thank you very much for you time.

    Welcome to the forum.

You'll be better off with 64bit Windows. SSD drive should work fine- no reason why it wouldn't. As for power management- you'll be using Win 7 power management and you will be able to see battery icon in system tray and change profiles- these are all built in features.

Thank you very much for you fast reply.
I'll order them tommorow then since everything seems to be ok.
By the way, by doing these changes will i see a satisfying difference in my perfomance?

I don't know what do you expect out of it but if you don't you can always upgrade the CPU and GPU (thanks to MXM-II module)

Since the hard drive tends to be the slowest component in a computer for general use, upgrading to an SSD will be a marked improvement.

Sorry to act as a newby but i have no idea what MXM-II is.
Ive googled it and from my understanding its like a cpu upgrade.
Do you mean i can purcahase this item and install it to my system?
Or is it like a software based?

MXM-II is a module/slot the graphics card goes in. You can upgrade your 9500M GS to say ATI Radeon HD4650 or HD4670.
    See here for details.
So yes you can buy a new GPU and replace your current one.

WOW! thats amazing! Seriously thats the first time im hearing about these stuff. I will keep that in mind for sure. But since im already spending around£200 for Win7 and a ssd it would be over my budget to spend another 200 for a new card.
Thank you very much though for all the info you have provided me with. Now i have to start saving again for the card in the near future.
