    1. What USB stick did you use(spacewise)? Try different stick and remember - as small as possible.
    2. Are you sure you're using the right BIOS? If yes then try to flash(using the CD method) with an older version, v1.43 for example...

I used a 64MB stick, the only other ones I have are old MP3 players that have USB connections so not ideal...

I'm pretty sure the BIOS is right, I'll try it with v1.43 then an older one and let you know what happens...

Is there anything else it could be? I think it might be linked to overheating problems (the last time it worked.. it suddenly switched itself off after a while of 'normal' internet usage, i.e. facebook, youtube and MSN).

Ok using v.1.43 didn't work either.. I will try other versions by CD/USB tomorrow...

If that doesn't work, would it be worth trying the phoenix stuff mentioned in the other major thread on recovering the BIOS?

Also would making the CD bootable make any odds?

Sorry to be a pain, but I really don't want to have to take it to a repair shop for them to go "oh you need a new X, Y and Z" unless it's necessary :p

If your laptop has(and I'm pretty sure it does) the Insyde BIOS then no, the Phoenix recovery won't work for you, no way.
I'd try another usb stick or CD...dunno what to tell ya..

No idea about the bootable part, but as CDs are cheap I guess you can give it a shot.

Not to worry, thanks for your help so far...

I have an job interview tomorrow so I'll have a go at the "early" bios versions after that tomorrow... then failing that I guess I'll have to take it to someone... I notcied on another thread that it might be the GPU that's gone or something...

Any other ideas / suggestions / help would be awesome :)

    Hi,

New development... I tried another BIOS version and again it still wouldn't start so I tried plugging in an external monitor and surprisingly I had a display again... and the BIOS flashing was successful (put it back to v1.45) ... BUT...

    1) The display has yellow lines down the BIOS / vista screens (the same as just before it last crashed)...

    2) It wont boot up to windows, it will do the vista "loading" bar but doesn't get any further and pauses on a blank screen.

I've tried the windows recovery stuff it offers (as opposed to starting windows normally) and it can't suss out what is wrong.

    Any ideas?

I just got my 3810-6415 bricked and I tried the above method. After I plug my power cord and press the power button with Esc+Fn, there is still no power (no LED and even LAN cable). But, i went ahead finish the rest even though there was no FAN spinning sound. Is there a way I could still fix it? Thanks in advance.

I got the dreaded Verify Error during a BIOS update and now I can't turn on the computer at all. Fn + Esc and still nothing happens.

    Hey all,

I thought I'd post a resolution to my situation in case others are at this point and it's still not working... basically as the family computer broke as well I had to get this repaired independently.

As deduced from the other topics it was the GPU that needed reseating (the joints were a bit dry on the board). They could do this because the screen still worked when plugging an external monitor in...

So they fixed that, modified the CPU/GPU fan so it is running at 100% all the time (has made a significant difference to overheating... hasn't gone past being warm yet!)... and as I tried to do a system restore and buggered up / wiped / damaged the partition with the ACER recovery stuff they wiped it and reinstalled vista (which has gotten rid of the bloatware)... all for £113...

    Good luck people!!

Does BIGOZONE post here anymore ?

I have the Acer Aspire 5720 Core2Duo ICL50. I am another idiot that stupidly tried to update official bios releases from the Acer website. In this case I was going from 1.06 (I bought this laptop in August 2008!) to Version 1.45 (How the hell were there so many changes in a short space of time!) I did so to sort out a sound problem that was fixed by the bios updates. Acer support is attrocious (they have now moved support to India where basic english is even a barrier)

I have tried the flash methods off a CD Drive, A usb drive and a floppy usb drive. In all cases it is clear that the drive is searching or loading a file. Problem is it doesnt reboot or switch off and the fan stays on.

Infact I noticed that when pressing the FN+Esc and then switching on the power button that it wont actually boot into recovery mode and turn the fan on until I take my finger off the power button (and the led behind it doesnt actually come on at all).

When connecting the power cord having emptied the laptop via the 10 sec release, I notice that the orange light flickers for a sec.

When i switch the laptop back on having aborted the flash recovery procedure I get a yelloww light and fan for maybe 0 secs then blank screen and yellow led stays on.

Is there a specific filename that it needs to renamed to. Acer dont even have the 1.06 version on any website! The earliest version I have seen is 1.17 and that didnt work. I have come to the conclusion that a lot of jiggery pokery is being done by Acer and that a lot of renaming of models and their hardware is going on by Acer Europe and as a result you need to have assembled this yourself to know what bios series should be in it. Bring back CMOS batteries!

If I ever do meet Mr acer I am likely to smack him accross the head with this laptop as that is about as useful as it is now after a short life!

I'd be grateful for any help by the by!

    Hello everyone,

I got an error during bios upgraded on my aspire 5720g and now have a dead machine, too. I tried to recover using the instructions on first page with current bios firmware 1.45 and the earliest available 1.16. I tried the following filenames: ICL50HW.fd, ICL50.fd, CL50HW.fd, CL50.fd, and BIOD.fd. I tried it with CD, USB Thumb and USB Floppy. None would work as described in the tutorial. It seems, that the laptp tries to read the files, but if for example floppy is connected, I see that it switches reading from CD to floppy and back. So it doesn't seem to find the right file. I never come to the point, that the machine turns off itself and I left it on for several hours.

Do I need another filename? Is there something else I can do? I really need help here and I hope that someone can answer my question as this is a pretty old thread.

Thanks for any help and kind regards,
    Markus

Really need help if anyone still watching this thread. I have acer aspire 5315 and made the fatal error of trying to flash bios from within windows. As soon as it started system locked up and would not reply. Only way to shut down was remove AC and battery. Simply wont turn on now, no lights no thing. Tried the method of holding Fn&Esc to re-flash original bios but everything stays dead. Also tried other key combos with no joy. Please help

I'm in the identical situation with the same laptop.

Freaking out because it's not mine and this was only meant to be a simple update for a friend, and I have NOT got the money to go and replace it.

I have the Acer Aspire 5315. I am another idiot that stupidly tried to update official bios releases from the Acer website.
Obviously I received the error message and won´t turn off, so I decided to unplug the battery and then nothing happened.
I tried the Phil method, using CD ROm and USB with the correct bios version ( Version 1.45 ).
The laptop won´t turn on, the laptop do nothing, no recovery, no spin noise, no led power on, no dvd rom led blinking, no nothing, nothing nothing and nothing.
What do I have to do, What i´m doing wrong?, I followed all steps very carefully.
Suggestions? advices?, another way to reflash the bios? I unplugged the battery, I plugged again, nothing happens again.

    Try this:
    1. Burn v1.45 (renamed to ICL50HW.FD) to a CD.
    2. Keep the battery plugged in.
    3. While holding Fn+Esc, plug in the AC adapter. You should see the ring around the power button light up for a moment. If it doesn't light up, you probably have a hardware issue.
    4. Release Fn+Esc.
    5. Press the Power button. Fan should spin up.
    6. Insert the disc into the DVD drive and wait. Machine shall power off eventually.
    7. Turn the machine back on, and reconfigure the BIOS.

If you get stuck anywhere in this process, then remove the battery and the main bottom cover, short the internal battery for 10 seconds (to clear the CMOS), re-assemble the laptop, and start over from step 2.

In case anyone cares, the recovery bios filename for the Acer Aspire 5742G is PEW71X64.fd and you can use any 4MB .fd file from acer's site for this model, put it on a fat16/fat32 formatted usb drive or a CD/DVD

DO NOT TAKE OUT THE BATTERY WHEN THE FLASH FAILS!!!!

Multiple reports that the laptop will have no lights, which means that the thing is so poorly designed, that taking the battery out blows something on the motherboard.

This happened to me, and now I have one big paperweight. I don't know what to tell the customer.

What sabotage from Acer. I was admiring their new nVidia GT540m based laptop, but now never Acer. DO NOT UPDATE TO 1.45 UNLESS YOU WANT TO KILL YOUR LAPTOP!!!

If anyone has any advice, let me know. I'm contemplating desoldering the BIOS chip from the motherboard and having it flashed externally, if I only knew which chip is the BIOS.

    Hi all,
I went to update my bios last night and ended up (in my half awake state) flashing it with a bios for an acer 5310. It flashed but then it rebooted and now when I attempt to turn it on the fan powers, the power and wireless light comes on but then it switches itself off.

I have tried every variation for a bios recovery on this thread but none worked, any suggestions on what else I can try?

    Thanks
    Thornt

    Hello,

i have an acer aspire 5315 with insyde bios h2o version 1.43

i wanted to use the software granola to save money (power consumption and ecology) but after the install it tells me to enable DVFS in the bios. (dynamic voltage and frequency scaling). so i rebooted and went in the bios but i saw nothing that could resemble to dvfs. i saw that my bios settings were very poor. excepted boot priority, and ahci, setting the time i didn't see many setting to play with.

so i wondered if a bios update or changing of bios system (i know it could be risky). but i would like to be able to enable this ing DVFS.

maybe this functionality has to be given on the manufacturing, i mean if the pc is not made with the right power management when it comes out fromthe factory, you can't enable it after (it is a hardware issue)

Flash the BIOS from the x920G vs. 9600M GT thread. That one has everything unlocked that is present in the BIOS.

    4750 has Phoenix SecureCore Tiano.

Try this file: request download ticket | ifile.it

This will hopefully let your machine boot into an OS, allowing you to re-flash a correct BIOS. (Phoenix Tiano has an unusual recovery method; it does not flash the recovery image directly, instead, it just loads it as a temporary BIOS to allow using the regular flasher.)

    The process is:
    1. Put BIOS.cap on an USB flash drive, or burn it to a CD; then plug in the flash drive or insert the CD into the affected notebook.
    2. Remove battery and disconnect the charger.
    3. Press and hold Fn+Esc.
    4. Plug in the charger.
    5. Laptop should start booting automatically. If it doesn't press the Power button (still holding Fn+Esc).
    6. Release Fn+Esc. Boot menu or EFI shell should come up.
    7. Boot to your OS as you would normally do.
    8. Once booted, reflash your BIOS using the usual flash utility.

    its not working dude!!

    1. should i format the USB first? (fat or fat32???) people said fat32 is for larger disk size??
    3. Press and hold Fn+Esc. (duration of pressing??)
    5. If it doesn't press the Power button (duration of pressing??)
    6. Release Fn+Esc (duration of pressing Fn+Esc before release??). Boot menu or EFI shell should come up.

after all steps (also repeated so many times) but, nothing is happened.
the power is off then its turn on and fan spin and stop..
its repeats for the whole times..

    but

if plug in the ac/dc (never unplugged)for the whole time then press power on, the scratch gray screen showed up.
but nothing you can do with that screen..

    please help me

    1. You need FAT, probably. But for me, a CD has worked best for all Insyde systems.

You need to hold Fn+Esc continuously while plugging in the AC adapter and pressing (momentarily) the Power button. Once the fan spins up, release Fn+Esc.

    Yes, burn it as Data.

The link you posted is for Phoenix BIOS. You have Phoenix SecureCore Tiano EFI.

I do not know what is wrong with my laptop.
i have followed all the steps you asked to but, the result is disappointing..

i have tried either by pen drive or cd, both showed the same behavior..

    1. i unplugged the power cable, removed battery.
    2. i pluged in usb / for cd, i powered on, and opened cd tray, put cd in and closed it back and unplugged the cable off.
    3. i hold fn+esc and plug in power cable (nothing happened)
    4. i press 'power on' once. the left led if in 'blue' followed by led two from right (sorry,i dont know the meaning of the symbol)
    5. then it has sound of cd player spinning (i guess it was cd, sound from right).
    6. after that sound, i released holding of fn+esc button.
    7. in 5 seconds, the two from right led blinking rapidly then, laptop is off !!!
8.then, 4 led turn on (power on, left led, 2 from right led, and cd player) and then, off continuously. i think its working, since last before i get asleep until this morning (bout 10 hours) it still continuously.

this the video i upload on youtube.com
    Watch Problem !!!

(there was a black screen in the video because i need to plug in the cable while holding on fn+esc, i put camera on the table for a while, and sorry for bad quality of video too, at least you can watch it)

help me to fix it please.. :(

What happens if you do not plug in the USB drive / insert the CD?

So, it is not even detecting the disc.

Try clearing the CMOS by removing or shorting out the CMOS battery. (EFI BIOSes usually use the on-flash NVRAM for Setup data storage, but the CMOS is used for early-boot settings, so it can still cause problems.)

If that doesn't help, then your motherboard is shot (probably the power regulation circuit).

thanx ellalan, disassembled last night but..
(one of screw is broken m2x3 front of screen, cannot open perfectly)

i force open part so i can see inside it.
the CMOS battery is on the left hand side.

to netroller, i followed the steps (removing and put it back) but, still the same..

is that means, i need to change with the new motherboard which costly about RM 700 (USD 200)..?

Well, if there are any competent repair centers nearby, you can try getting the board repaired. If removing the battery did not help, then it is not a BIOS issue. (A broken/misflashed BIOS alone can't cause constant power cycling.)

Has anyone tried this Bios Flash on a 5534? Not sure which crisis software to use on mine as I have the frozen Acer screen only. I can get to that Partial Bios information screen which tells me I have version 1.12 by pushing fn and Esc.
