If the fans spin up, then it's not the BIOS. Most likely something on the mobo got burned.

Hi everyone, after hours of endless web searches and no sleep, hopefully this post will help someone. It applies to ACER ASPIRE 5734Z
- Visit the Acer website and download the LOWEST version of BIOS update in this case 1.02
- Rename the file PAWF5106.fd to PAWF5X64.fd (x64 is for the intel architecture)
- Copy this file ONLY to a blank usb stick
- And follow the fn+esc procedure as outlined in the thread
Special thanks to
Bigozone for the procedure and
rajkosto in post#121 for the clue in renaming the file
I tried endless renaming and failed "solutions" over the last 6 days before getting right. THANKS GUYS!!!
Now to get some sleep to lose the bags under my eyes LOLTo God be the Glory

Hi, I have Acer Aspire 4540 (Insyde BIOS ver1.05 from acer website) and I wanted to downgrade the BIOS to ver1.03 (from acer website). I did it through windows flash and now it's brick.
Unplug AC & Battery
Holding Fn+Esc plug AC (power led blinks)
then press once the power button (while holding Fn+Esc)
the fan starts at maximum speed and nothing happens and it doesn't seem that usb is being read (no blinking)
I use FAT format for usb drive and put all possible names for filename.
pls help me.
Thanks -
Open the BIOS image file using AndyP's Phoenix Tool.
Also, try burning the correctly named BIOS image to a CD, rather than copying to a USB drive. -
Hi Netroller, does this also applies on an Acer 5517?
I had explained my problem on the thread I created before I found this one.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/660926-acer-5517-bricked-after-failed-bios-update.html
thanks in advance. -
Does the 5517 have a Phoenix or Insyde BIOS? This method is for Insyde only; also, the filename will likely be different for the 5517, use AndyP's tool to find out.

why procedure non work in acer 7720g? i have following step by spep, with floppy disk, but not work.
the floppy read into 1 minutes, I also waited 1 hour after the end of reading but nothing happens -
Hi,
This guide is for Aspire 5315 so its not unlikely it doesn't work 7720G. I'd suggest reading along the thread, if I recall correctly there has been some 7720G owners posting here, maybe someone posted a workaround. -
I have a problem with my acer 5315.
Until point 8 everything is fine, but when i should hold down FN+ESC and power buton, doesnt turn on, only if i press the power buton just once, not holding it dow. And my laptop just shuts off in 10 second. HELP!!! -
@diamagic: Floppy disks are not supported for Insyde BIOS recovery. Use a CD or a flash drive.
(BTW, the 7720G has the same BIOS as the 5315, so the recovery is also the same.)
@rolandzaira: Keep holding Fn+Esc from the moment you plug in the charger until you hear the fan spinning up.
Also, try shorting the BIOS battery for a few seconds (with all power sources removed) - corrupted CMOS settings can cause such issues as well. -
Everytime i do that the laptop shuts off in about 10 seconds. Holding down FN+ESC still powers doen after 10 seconds. Any ideas?
-
Short the CMOS battery for a few seconds to clear the CMOS. If that doesn't fix the 10 second shutdown, then it's a hardware issue (possibly something is overheating).

Hi
I use an ACER 5100 notebook and the BIOS is "dead" (I think it is an PHOENIX BIOS); it is possible to use "ASPIRE 5315 BIOS RECOVERY using a USB THUMBDRIVE" procedure to recover my BIOS? What file should I use for recovery (download the BIOS file from ACER website and rename it)?
THK for your time. -
pls iwanna kn0w if this will work for my emachine e525. and if n0t, how do i get the .fd file from my bios version
-
Hello guys, I have an Acer Aspire 5250-0866 with INSYDE Bios H2O;
I tried to update Bios from Acer's site...
Following readme.txt instructions to flash in DOS mode, I got the message "Success!", automatic reboot.... and after... crash!
Now, I power on the laptop, DVD drive and HD make some noise, the fan runs, but nothing else.
I'm trying to "recover" the bios with other versions from Acer's site and following here instructions, but no success until now... =(
I copied ONLY the file Q5WP6107.fd to my kingston DTI/2Gb (I don't have other).. and I did all the instructions posted here. Is this the right way?
When I power on the laptop holding FN + ESC I need to see something on screen? (in my case, screen stay black all the time).
The thumbdrive light need to blink? (here stay off all time
I need to rename the FD file? What's right name to my case?
All tips are welcome!
Thank you all. -
You can get the correct file name by opening Q5WP6107.fd in AndyP's Phoenix BIOS modding tool. It will blurt out the recovery file name as it loads the BIOS.
Disclaimer: I do not condone the use of AndyP's tool for the purpose that it was originally designed for! -
Thank you!
Well, I tried AndyP Phoenix Tool v2.11 but I got this:
Q5WP6107.fd --> BIOS.f?
Q5WP6106.fd --> BIOS.f?
Q5WP6105.fd --> BIOS.f?
NALx0103.FD --> BIOS.F?
So...I supose those are wrong names, but I crossed my fingers..
On Win7 I can't rename files using '?'. I tried just BIOS.f with all listed versions and this time I tried FN+ESC, FN+B and HotKey+B too.
But everything still as the same: black screen, thumbdrive's LED didn't blink, nothing else happens.
No more ideas?
Thank you very much.
**P.S.: I'll NEVER try to fix my girlfriend's laptop again! Kidding hahaha** -
the 5315 is not a PHOENIX BIOS.. it's made by INSYDE... not sure maybe some new stuff i need to read up on?
gosh, it's good to be me!! -
@r00xEr: I'd guess the correct filename is "BIOS.FD" then - the name should end with "FD", "BIN" or "ROM". The ? is probably a bug.
-
did you ever get it fixed??
sorry of the 4+ yr delay...
if your laptop' power led won't even turn power the green LED or spin the fan with the then it's say a power issue.... make sure the battery is out and the AC is plugged in.. then if you hit the power button and get no lights anywhere then you have a problem with the voltage section of the MB... i just hope you can find a local source to repair it or else your looking at a MB repair however if you get a green power led light maybe you can find someone to surface mount a new programmed bios chip... there is a seller out there who will load it with the bios of your choice and even do mods to the bios if needed.
feel free to Pm me if you have any questions or still have it and want to sell it.

now i have a 5315 that looks like it's BIOS is toast.... and all my USB thumb drives are screwed... can't even make a CD or DVD.... HDDs are too big for FAT or FAT16..... guess i'm going to break down and buy a new thumb drive..
the thing used to be my 12 y/o niece's and it started shorting out any time you moved i(i think it had a fan screw come loose and cause shorts whenever moved). however now with it in my hands it seems to try to do a bios recovery but i don't have a thumb drive.. anyway maybe i'll be able to get one from mom when i go get her X-mas crap out of the attic and basement.
if anyone has any advice i'm open to it....
so far i've tried a sony memoystick pro in a card-reader that was hooked up to USB, and everything seemed right, but never finished.
also the CD, modem. wifi, 1 stick of ram, the battery has been removed. -
update:::
now getting a bios screen loop...
will post more details tonight'
bigO -
@NetRolller, thank you. Yes, I've tried BIOS.FD and bios.fd with FD, ROM and BIN extensions... didn't work too
Everything as the same.
I'm not sure if a thumbdrive works on model 5250 because thumbdrive's led never blinks.
I'll try CDs tomorrow.
to be continued... -
no longer getting BIOS screen... might need to take parts back out to see if one of them is the cause...
you must release the power button while holding ESC and FN keys after doing everything else. -
@bigozone you are the best of the best! I spent days reading your posts from 2008 till now.
Despite my search in here I couldn't find answers for the trouble that I have with 2 aspire laptops!
Can you spread some love and give me some of your knowledge?
The first is an Aspire 5520 / ICW50. When I turn it on the fan turns on for a few seconds and then off
and the power and HD leds keeps blinking. The monitor remains black. Could it be a bios problem?
The other laptop is an Aspire 7720G / ICK70. It is complete dead, no leds turn on.
I want to buy a new motherboard from ebay but I dont have any method to test if the MXM card
is working! Does the MB.ALN02.001 have an integrated GPU to use in case my MXM card is dead? -
Thought i would give my Aspire 5315 a new beginning.
Wiped HDD then installed XP Pro in preparation for dual boot machine. Downloaded all XP Files from Acer site and installed them - looking good.
As BIOS version on laptop was 1.17 and the one on the Acer site is 1.45 I thought it would be beneficial to update it especially as I was upgrading the processor from celeron to a faster dual core pentium.
The file was un zipped and executed and immediately came up with CheckSum Error. The screen froze and keyboard and mouse stopped working. I waited a while, 10 -15 mins but still no response. I was unable to power down so had to remove power supply then battery to switch it off. Now when I connect power there is nothing, no lights, fans, display - its dead.
I have tried bigozones recovery method to the letter but nothing not even a flicker. I shorted the bios battery to 'reset' it then tried again but still nothing. Tried various file names and key combinations to no avail.
Has the BIOS just died? and would that stop the laptop from powering up? Even the battery light doesn't illuminate when it is fitted. There is voltages at the bios chip in the 3 - 5 volt range on various pins so i assume the motherboard is waiting for a signal to proceed
I know you can buy preprogrammed BIOS chips so i'd fit a new one if that will cure the issue but if it can be sorted without that then if anyone has any ideas or experiences they would care to share they would be appreciated. -

How can i do this to a bricked Aspire 5742g?
PD: You can check my post for info -
do you still have the file for BIOS.cap? I have an Acer Aspire 4750G which won't boot up after I flashed BIOS. And also, I read somewhere that you need a few more files along with BIOS.cap. Is this true?
-
Hi, i have acer aspire 556g and i updated bios to 1.09 and it restarted and now only black screen. i can hear the fan running and the power and battery light turn on. i have tried this method in many ways.
i have found a 256 MB USB hdd and put the files mentioned here. i downloaded bios 1.17 from acer FTP, and put the wph file on the USB.
i have tried with/without battery and hdd. the indicator light on the USB dose not turn off when the battery is in. Do you think the a USB FDD would work form me? And do you have any suggestions on what else i can try
Thanks in advance for all help... -
because my laptop get problem again.

Hi all,
I have problem with Acer 5552G - it ceased to switch on.
When I press Power ntb is on for 2-3 sec (Fan + indicators + cd) and after that everything stops (onli power indicator is on).
I download BIOS - BIOS_Acer_2.14_Windows. In there is "XEWxx214.FD". I rename it to "BIOS.fd".
Next I copy these file to the USB Flash Device (Formatted to FAT - 4GB).
After that I unplug battery and AC adapter for my laptop and plug in USB device (I try it also with CD).
In next step I press Fn+Esc and plug in AC adapter (without battery). Then I waiting 10-15 sec and press Power Button for 2 sec.
When I relase Power Button (Fn+Esc still presses), notebook is power on (fan 100%), but USB device is not loaded (I have indicator on these).
Please help me. -
I have an Acer Aspire 5315 and at first I bricked it by using the windows flash tool.
I got something like a checksum error as far as I recall, then it was too late to abort and I left it running for half an hour before pulling out the battery and AC (can't remember which order I did it in).
(I was trying to solve a power problem, which - too late - I found out was hardware related, I solved that one now, I can measure the voltage coming in on the motherboard).
Anyway I couldn't get it to do the recovery at all - FN+ESC did nothing for me, no lights, no fan, nothing. It was a stupid, dead piece of plastic.
Then I stumbled upon this web-page: Bios-Chip24.com - Notebook, Motherboard u. Desktop Bios Chips
wherefrom I ordered a new bios chip, ready flashed with 1.45, yay! It came in the mail today and I soldered out the old chip, replaced it with the new. It still won't boot normally, but - lucky me! - I can now initiate the FN+ESC routine!
But!...
It never completes!
I've tried both the old ICL50HW.fd file linked in first post here, and the new 1.45 from the package on Acer's website (must rename it to "ICL50HW.fd" or it doesn't do anything).
I've tried both USB pendrive (256MB FAT16), CDROM and even an old IBM USB floppy drive. All seem to work at first!
The LED flashes for a few seconds when I try the pendrive, a little longer for the CD and for over a minute for the floppy. But after that, nothing! No lights, but the fan keeps running. I've kept it running for an hour one time, nothing happens.
Strangely enough although the power button is locked the DVD eject button isn't... but that's the only sign of life. I can't do anything except unplug the AC.
At no time do I have anything showing on the screen (is that normal?) I tried to attach an external monitor, but it doesn't turn on either.
And if I try to boot normally I just get a blank screen too. There the fan comes on too - but not as loud as when trying to flash. Again I'm stuck, I can't even shut it down by holding the power button for 4+ seconds, so out with battery and AC again.
Any idea what's going on? Did I fry something by pulling out the battery/AC in the wrong order or what the hxxx? -
.. I just found out that my Acer 5315 (described in previous post) will be a little more alive if I don't put in any RAM. At least then I can turn it off by holding down the power button for 4 secs. This is the case both when I try (and fail) to flash it and when I boot it normally. I am thinking it could be something with display chip not trying to use RAM since there is none?
I'm beginning to think that my Intel GMA X3100 GPU is acting up!
I had to dispose of the thermal pad on the GPU when I opened up the machine - I then applied a layer of thermal paste instead, but I had to use a lot because of the gap. Maybe this is a problem?
More on this matter later, when I get the time to further investigate!
// Lasse -
It's dead, Jim.
I have replaced the thick layer of thermal paste on the GPU with a piece of copper and only a little paste on each side. No difference. Must have fried it.
I've had the entire motherboard out and scrutinized it for shortcuts and other visually perceivable defects. Nothing.
The CMOS battery reads 3.0 V as it should, but even so I have tried to replace it with a new one. No difference.
The RAM works perfectly in another laptop... and it *is* the correct specs - I double checked.
Actually, come to think of it, the CPU might be the problem too? Maybe that too doesn't fire up entirely when there's no RAM, so doesn't hang the power down button?
Next step: Order a new/refurb motherboard online.
// Lasse -
I just wanted to say that this method works on the Aspire 5551-A. It's slightly different, because the on/off button only activates when you release it, but it works.
When you get to the point of having pressed down the two keys and pressed the on/off button, release it. Keep the two keys down. Now the problem is that the blue light in the on/off button doesn't flicker at all, so you don't see that anything is happening. However, the fan starts up while the keys are held down, and then (presumably) it's OK to release them.
I left my laptop like this, with fan whirring away, but no signs of any other activity, for about an hour. When I came back to it, I switched it off with the blue button, and then on again. It came back to life!! I'd given up, basically, so it was a major shock to see the screen activate.
By the way, it only worked when the USB flash drive contained only the one file - XEWxx214.fd. I had changed the name to BIOS.fd, but I don't know whether that had any effect.katalin_2003 likes this. -
Having celebrated that success, I now have to report that it has gone again. The laptop was switched off overnight, and failed to start up again when I just tried it. What's more puzzling - the method that worked yesterday is not working today.
UPDATE: Yes, it does work. During the BIOS installation phase there are no signs of activity, but if you just leave it (in my case for over an hour) and then restart the laptop, the screen kicks into life and the machine boots up. Once you have it booted up, I would suggest doing a proper Windows-based BIOS update from Aspire. Mine is fully-functional now. -
That's not a BIOS issue than. BIOSes can't go bad overnight themselves.
Is the CMOS battery OK? -
I'm not sure about the battery, but what I did find was that the RAM was not seating very well. There is a possibility that this was creating problems, but there is no doubt that doing the USB BIOS thing worked.

I am having a problem with my out of warranty Acer Aspire One 532h. It was working fine but I wanted to reinstall Windows. So in order to boot through USB, I tried to access BIOS but when I pressed on boot, it could not enter BIOS. So, I thought of updating my BIOS and through the support site I download the latest BIOS update and ran it on Windows.
When the netbook restarted, it got stuck on black screen with solid cursor and does not enter BIOS or goes beyond it. I researched on the web and tried to do BIOS recovery step by by extracting the .ZIP from the support site and renamed .fd fileto zg5ia32.fd. Copied the zg5ia32.fd and Fla.exe files to USB flash drive.Turned off the netbook and connected the power cable. Plugged the USB stick in and press and HOLD down the FN and ESC together and then pressed the power button. When I released my finger from power button, and then released FN and ESC after few seconds but the power light did not blink as it should.
I am still stuck with black screen on starting my netbook with a solid cursor (like underscore) siting there forever..
Here is the page from BIOS update can be downloaded. Which one I am supposed to download?

anyone wondering about the image.fd file,,, it's the ?????.FD file included in the dos flasher if Acer is even still putting that up publicly.
man how i miss that password to the acer tech site now that it's been changed.

Hi Guys,
I have Aspire 5315 with windows XP and today i made BIOS update from V1.14 to V1.45. Progress bar goes to the end and after that computer was automatically switched off.
When i switched on, windows is loading about two seconds and after that i have blue screen (windows error) and computer restart. In BIOS i had information about BIOS V1.45. I made operation from first post of this thread with ICL50HW.fd file on USB and now i have BIOS V1.11 but unfortunatelly it doesn't help. Still i have blue screeen and computer restart after 2 seconds windows loading.
Any suggestions? -
If you get past the BIOS POST and get a Windows blue screen than the BIOS is fine. Don't attempt to recover it, there is no need. Focus your energy on Windows itself - try safe mode of if all else fails reinstall it.
