(I’m not sure if this is the correct section for my thread, if not I ask the moderator to move it to better section of the forum; thanks)

    Hello everyone,

    I have Acer Aspire 8930G: T5800 CPU @ 2.00 GHz, GeForce 9600m GS 512MB, 4GB Ram DD3, 64bit OS (Win7).

I want to upgrade my current CPU to Q9100 QAVK, and I also want to get one of these video cards: 8700m GT, Quadro FX2700m or FX3600m. (All MXM III type)

Will any of these components work with my laptop? Will I need to update my BIOS etc…?

    Thanks in advance.

Yeah, the 8700m GT is just an overclocked 8600m GT, and it has the fault NVIDIA GPU problem, so i would stay clear of it.

@Onemore007 - There are quad-core enabled 8930Gs, but I don't know your BIOS version. If I remember correctly there were two versions of the BIOS. It was initially shipped only with dual-core CPUs (its original BIOS), and after half a year or so, they started to put a Q9000 in there (revised BIOS). Take a look at Acer's support pages and check if you have the latest BIOS version.

Changing a loptop's GPU is always a tough one, there is always a risk. If it's an MXM type, just take your chance and shoot. I took mine and I won :D

@Tinderbox (UK) - If you are asking for the same laptop, I'd already answered on this question :)

    Thanks for the advice.

My System BIOS version is v1.05... I took a look on the Acer support website and they have v1.13 available for download. But I did not find any update news on the bios. Anyone know where I can find it?

This is where I found the new bios:
    http://www.acer.co.uk

    Go to Service&Support/Driver Download/NoteBook/Aspire/Model

Sometimes they put a small change log in the archive, sometimes (most) they don't :) You can always try the new CPU with the old BIOS, and if nothing happens, to flash the new one.

Stick with GPUs that were sold with your machine: something like the GeForce 9700M GT, for example.

I couldn't find 9700m GT or GTS anywhere so I have decided to buy 9650m GT from ebay. It has worked out in the end with the help from TehSuigi.

So anyone who wants to upgrade their acer 8930G or perhaps similar models to 9650m GT, it is possible but specific drivers must be obtained from laptopvideo2go.com/drivers

I have played CSS with the new card, and it's running perfectly. I am very happy with the purchase. After the video drivers I have been getting little flickering on the screen which I have not noticed at first sight. To ASUS owners of M70Vn with 9650m GT card + Win7 it is a known problem.

It is fixed using the following program: PowerMizer Switch
    h ttp://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=273276

Run it as an Admin, and hit the OFF button. After restart the flickering is gone.

Good luck with your MXM upgrades.
