I recently rec'd my Acer 9502 laptop. I installed most of my programs and then decided to update the ATI video driver. I did not make an image of my drive. Big mistake! I won't do that again.

This is the procedure that I used to update my video driver. I went to Add/Remove programs and uninstalled the control panel and then the video driver. I rebooted and ran Driver Cleaner. I then installed the new video driver. I rec'd a message that told me the driver did not install correctly. I should restart in VGA. So, I rebooted in Safe Mode and my system crashed. One great big BSOD. The BSOD told me the problem was the ATI driver. From the point on, I could not get out of the BSOD everytime I rebooted in Safe Mode. I had to do a complete restore with the Acer Restore Disk. Nuts!!

    So, my question is;

How do you go about installing new video drivers?

    Thanks for any info.

Best bet would be to go to Omegadrivers.net, who produce non-certified but effective ATI drivers. They saved my bacon on a previous occasion when a similiar situation happened to me!
Download their latest drivers and you will get functionality back, plus a bit more.

You dont have to uninstall anything, it'll handle all of that or just replace what's needed. Also you dont have to boot up in safemode. Also are you using the drivers from Acer or ATI's website? I'd take the ones one the Acer site if I were you because they're known to work if it's on the Acer site. As for Omegadrivers, they will work also.

I think from davehires' post he was saying he got bsod in safe mode!
what might work is running recovery console using an xp disk, which is not supplied with the laptops so unless you have access to one you might be stuck.
the cd can be booted and at the prompt choose recovery console
that way you can manually remove copy change files
that is if vital data were on the drive (else slave the drive using a nice cheap usb enclosure and hook it up to another pc to get the data off)

I shall have a look at these omegadrivers as I really need better performance

Thanks for the advice. I used the new ATI 6.2 mobility drivers. I am going to give the Omega drivers try.

Ok Davehires this is the method for installing omegadrivers on my 5672wlmi
    Download driver
use ATI uninstall utility in add/remove programs, (this takes ages and disappears for a while for some reason)
    reboot when requested
check the the Catalyst Control Centre has been removed (add/remove programs)
install the omega driver , taking care to follow advice on their website and saying yes to the laptop driver question.
    reboot
    enjoy

its more than doubled my fps in F.E.A.R.

p.s. it makes the laptop run warmer than normal, probably why Acer restricted the driver.
