I was about to purchase the Acer 5102 after reading the great reviews. The power/price fits my needs.
But, I tried the computer at the store and everything looked great, except when I started the media center it was very very slow and sluggish. Using the arrow keys to change from pictures to video, etc. was very very slow with the animations on. The HP Turion (non dual core) next to it was much much faster and smoother.
Is this just a demo unit problem or is the 5102 sluggish with the media center?
TIA!!

Mine came with XP Pro, and its pretty quick, i think it was some software configuration that caused the problem

Don't buy it. If it turns out to have a video problem (like mine) it'll be hell to get Acer to do anything about it. And ATI does not support laptop video cards AT ALL.

Seems obvious enough doesn't it? They didn't make the card, acer made the board which has the card built into it. Don't go bashing ATI b/c the board failed blame acer and deal with them.I think you have your computer manufacturers mixed up on this one.
Dell makes the computer, it purchases hard drives from seagate. When your hard drive takes a crap you don't blame seagate and go to them, you go to the brand manufacturer.

The 5102 works Perfect and Fast for me, But then again Specs for this model differ a great deal from store to store.
You really can't judge a Display PC anyway as half of them are Da*n near broke. lol
I personally would not pay over $850 for anything thats non dual core, unless it's a Sony. -
I did, however, blame Acer by saying "it will be hell to get Acer to do anything about it." I said this, not because it is Acer's fault that the video performance is terrible, but because it is Acer who is obligated by warranty to fix the problem.
On top of this, it IS ATI's fault that this issue exists. See also: http://fixthe200m.wordpress.com/ for an example of the same issue happening with an HP laptop based on the same X300 GPU (a problem I was about to start a thread about). There is a problem with the graphics chipset that ATI produced.
I posted in this thread to warn that, if the computer is already displaying signs of a graphics problem then it may be related to a known issue that is not in any hurry to fix itself. I stand by this statement as a simple fact, whether you'd prefer that I blame Acer, ATI, or gremlins. -
I prefer the gremlins
About to buy 5102, media center seemed really slow at store?
