A while back I installed Vista alont with Ubuntu, using the GRUB bootloader. Now I've gone back to XP using the original Acer recovery disks. I've read on the internet that to remove the GRUB bootloader, you need to use the XP install disk to get to the commant prompt and run the fixmbr command.

How do I do that because it wont boot from my other XP disks.

Or is there any other way? I assumed the recovery would overwrite it, but it didn't.

    Cheers.

when installing XP choose the RECOVERY OPTION ,, i think you have to hit F2 or some key when the BLACK xp install is first starting...

a message will appear saying press ???? to repair (or to recover)... it's been a long time!!!

after pressing that key,, windows willl load to a command prompt and when you see the C: just type FIXMBR and hit enter

if you can boot into windows now... you might even be able to just click START,, RUN,, type CMD in box and click OK

then type CD C:\windows\command HIT ENTER

then type FIXMBR followed by enter::::
it that returns an error try typing FDISK /MBR...
while i've NEVER TRIED IT THIS WAY with XP it may save you from reloading XP again,,,

if none of that works download a WINDOWS 98 Startup floppydisk image.... and either burn to a CD using NERO or similar program (be sure to make the CD bootable)

or make a bootable USB THUMB DRIVE and copy the FLOPPY IMAGE FILES ONTO it
word of caution:: boot version of CD or THUMB drive MUST be from the SAME OS as THE FDISK program you are trying to run.... if they are not from the same OS you will get an INCORRECT VERSION error message

    that should get you going,
