ACER 2423 confirmed dead. The hard drive should have recoverable files and I want to access them. I put the drive into a USB external enclosure and my desktop can see the drive and its partitions. It will not however read any files. Does ACER have a software code or something that prevents this?

Nope, no such thing as far as I know. Are there any allocated space on the partitions? Tried some recovery software such as Recuva?

Definition please: "allocated space on partitions" Thanks you Is Recuva a software download or B&M purchase?

I doubt they hard coded anything. Acer doesnt make any of the parts they actually put in their systems. They use LG screens and Seagate made drives and stuff like that. I think what he was saying is does the system even recognize the drive exists? You should be able to go to Control Panel/Adminstrative Tools/computer management/storage and see if it lists another hard disk drive. If no, then that hard drive might be seized and just kaput!
