Considering the cheap price, what would you say is Acer's best gaming laptop?

Try acer 5920G for Mediocre gaming. There is also one with GF8800 but i dont know the exact model no.

BTW i own an 5920G and it rocks for the games i play.+ no heat issues.

well, it is GDDR2 so should be slow.

consider an ASUS or Dell for a lowend gaming stuff.

thta said , the 5920G is a great multimedia laptop in my opinon but it is a huge and ugly(ugliest in my honest opinion) laptop as wll.

Why does everybody talk trash about the 5920g. I own one and find it quite nice looking and don't have a heat issue. I did make myself a home made cooler just for when I'm playing games.

Yeah its interesting how some people give the Acer brand a good old hammering. My 2 so far have been faultless (touching wood)
Just as a matter of interest, how do you power those fans in your desk?

Can anybody post photos of the Acer gaming laptops turned on in action?
Also the only 5920's I could find are with the 1.5 processor. What about these new gemstone laptops?

I'm afraid that you might have "missed the boat" with the 5920G. Most of the new models seem to have 8600M GS (which is still good) and not the 8600M GT. Yes it is DDR2 though. Also, the processor used to be 2.0 or 2.2 - it seems to have dropped to 1.5, but having said that it is also cheaper now...

So whilst I would have highly recommended the 5920, Acer changed the model a few months back and I don't think it's so cutting edge anymore (I think it was the fastest for its price back at the time - with the new 8600M GT).

The new range are the "Blue Gemstones" I think. They are slightly bigger - 16" and 18" laptops I believe. You should get bigger graphics cards in there, and the processors are faster than 5920.

As far as the Acer reliability issue goes - I have had two Acer laptops: one which I bought 4 years ago for about £400 which still runs fine (obviously it's quite slow compared to modern beasts lol) and an earlier version of 5920 with C2Duo 2.0GHz 2GB RAM 8600MGT (256 DDR2) and 1GB Intel Turbo Memory. I love it! It does get quite hot on the far left side of the laptop, but only when playing the most demanding games I have - for example, CS Source and UT2004 on max settings apart from AA and AF - I get 150fps average. Does it get 'dangerously' hot though? I don't know what that is ... but others say it's fine so I will go with them! I do get a very odd beep / scratching noise occasionally, but it hasn't seemed to do any harm yet - hopefully it will be alright in the future! I posted it on this forum : http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=2930346#post2930346

I'm sure the new Blue Gemstone performance will be better with the improved specifications, but if people can play Call of Duty 4 and Crysis on the 5920, I think it will be good enough for pretty much everyone except the person that wants to play the games of tomorrow. Personally, I'm happy to go back over some old games a and see them in their full glory :)

I just use a 12v power supply. The kind you would use to power a portable cooler. It is the same as you would have like on a cordless phone but bigger. The fans are placed directly under all the cooling holes underneath. Works great. The processor fan never comes on even while playing games.

I have a home made cooler also, with four 80mm fans but I wasn't sure what voltage to use so I use an old base unit with 400 watt power supply, I have nothing else in the base unit so I just switch it on like a normal PC and it powers the fans, I have a fan speed adjuster on all fans too which works quite well. The laptop stays really cool when gaming, the highest I recorded was 59 degrees with all fans on low speed, so its very effective.
I also have the Nvidia M 8600 GS version, I wanted the GT but where I bought it from only had these. I don't think there is enough increase in performsnce to warrant me getting the GT to be honest, but I did get the Intel turbo memory too.

What are your 3dmark 2006 score with stock drivers. I get over 3400. I read that there is a large difference in speed with gt. I also have 512m ram.
