I have recently purchased an acer travelmate 8215. When I am surfing the net and periods of inactivity can hear faint grinding and high pitched clicking. Is it supposed to do that or is there a problem? I have only had this laptop five days, I will need to send it back within seven days if I want to get a refund. I don't know whether to send it back.

Does everyone elses Acer make faint grinding and high pitched clicking noises when surfing the web and typing and periods inactivity?

I have just bought an Aspire 5101 and I think i have heard some of the noises you're talking about. I assumed they are coming from the hard-disk drive, but i'm not sure, i could use an expert's advice also :).

It's OK, I have been reliably informed that it's supposed to do that. Just the hard drive working, nothing wrong. :) The sound is quite quiet, have got used to it now.

Mine does the same thing ... I think. The "clicking noises" I agree with, but the grinding ... I haven't experienced that yet. When I first got my lappy (a little over a month ago) I didn't notice anything; but after a couple of weeks I did notice something strange (picture the sound of a pop-up warning but muted, like a "blip" ... and coming from the Quick Launch keys near the back of the lappy). There is no pattern to the noise either, it can come up when I'm hard at work on a paper (which was when I first noticed it because I like to work in silence) or when I'm just staring at the desktop. It can come every few seconds or once every few minutes. Does anyone think that I have the same "problem;" that it's just my hard drive doing funky things? Although, the HDD light does not come on to indicate that there is activity when the noise occurs ...
