Congratulations for modding a second mini-PCIe slot :)
You should ask in an Insyde BIOS modding thread how to add your 3G card to the white list. Or just use BIOS v3108. Is there something you are missing in v3108? If you need VT, there are instructions how to mod it in Timeline Tweaks.

Any chance of posting up some pics of the mod? Just wondering did you use a sim reader that slots in the factory position behind the battery?

Can you tell us where you source the mini pci-e header and sim reader?

I too am keen to do this mod as I would like install my sierra modem mini pci-e modem instead of using a Huawei MiFi.

    Dear flash2light,

It is fantastic you could manage to integrate a 3G module :)
I am planning to do the same thing.

Recently I bought a 1810TZ (in Belgium) and I would like to add a WWAAN module. I made some research on this forum but didn't found relevant information to do it beside there are some problems with regognisation of some 3G cards.

As there seems to be a 1810(x) with 2 different 3G modules I made some research on E-bay to find one of those models (to avoid compatibility problems).

    That's what I found:

    - The mini PCI-e card, which is the HUAWEI EM770 model

    - The sim-card slot

    - And finaly the antenna (which I hope to be compatible)

Now I have some questions. First of all, will this material be compatible with my 1810TZ and will it work with european network? (I mean, is this WWAN card for the European market or the US and is there any difference between the Qualcomm model?)

Beside this, I don't have the mini PCI-e slot so I will have to solder it, will this model be perfect as I notice different size (what are those sizes due to?). Will this sim-card slot fit into the 1810? Is it difficult to solder those 2 items? How did you do to enable 3.3v? Is your compatibility problem solved?

I do thank you for your help. Once I have the right material I will make a step by step guide with some pictures (Unless you already have one) ;-)

I've never done this mod, but it seems like it should be analogous to Acer Aspire One 3G mod. You can compare it to 1410 here and here (got them here)
Seems like adding SIM slot to 1810 should be exactly the same as in Acer Aspire One above. The jumper seems to be in the same place. (You have to check this ofcourse!!)
As for adding voltage to PCI-e it should also be analogous to AAO, but I can't seem to find the jumper looking at the photos. Pin-outs for PCI-e and access to the actual motherboard should help.
I'm not doing this mod, but I will provide more information if I find it somewhere.

    Hope this helps someone

    Thanks for your sharing.

I asked somebody help me to solder PCIe and SIM slots. He told me the Windows doesn't noticed a PCIe card exist (No new hardware), but the card get warm (not by instrument, by hand).

I hope can get the PCIe slot working first than SIM slot.

What else can I do. (I can do simple soldering and open the chassis.)

Just wanted to add more information. According to changelog for 3303 BIOS:
Does that look like a green light for non-Acer specific 3G cards? Who knows!

I've gathered from other threads that there is interest in using the 2nd PCIe (er.. USB :-/ ) slot...

    Hi,

Yesterday I finally received my mini pci e connector and sim card connector. I soldered everything on board, make a small jumper for pin 2 of mini pci-e to existed mini pci e connector (in order to get 3.3v there) and got my modem working. It has been detected by windows and I was able to install the drivers.
But it constantly says NO SIM CARD INSERTED :(

I found that the problem is because Acer did not solder on board few more components. I need your help please.
Anyone who has Acer 1410 opened and may just take a look on the PCB board at the bottom of your SIM Card slot you have component U10, what is written on it ? In my case there is no component U10 soldered on board. It is probably just a power supply for SIM Card. Also I am missing the following capacitors around U10: C230, 232, 233, 238, 239
I am sure this is my problem that these components are missing but I have no idea how and where to get their values :(
Please help if anyone know or faced that problem or may just give me the values of these components.
    Thank you,
    Vlad

Hi, assuming you are looking for someone with a 3G-equipped 1410, you are out of luck since none exist, afaik... :-/
As for 1410 mobo pics, I think Lepton has a 1410... in any case, good luck :)

Thank you for the fast reply. I think I just figured out what is wrong. I did not test it yet but it looks like I do not have +3.3V power on the second pin of my SIM Card slot. This means that my SIM Card doe not work. So I have to put a jumper and probably it will work now :) Will test it in the evening.

    No luck for me :(
It keeps saying NO SIM CARD INSERTED.
    Modem is detected OK.
I checked and I have +3.3V on the V+ (pin2) of the Sim Card Slot.

That is very strange. I am using Sierra Wireless MC8775 HSDPA MiniPCI Card.
Maybe this one is not good for Acer.
Which HSDPA 3G modem should be used with in Acer ?

    Okey here we go !

I would like officially confirm that 3G mod works on Acer 1410 model. Finally, after two days of researching on the internet and looking for the schematics I fihured out what was my problem in this mod. All my troubles were in my SIM Card socket which I bought from eBay.
WARNING !!!! Whoever plans to do this mod DO NOT USE THIS TYPE OF SIM CARD SOCKET: THIS IS WRONG ONE
If you solder this socket to your Acer 1410 you will burn the SIM Card since all pins on this socket do not match with mother board pinout on the Acer.
You MUST get this socket: THIS IS CORRECT ONE

Also make sure that you give +3.3V power to pins 2 and 52 of the mini-pci-e connector which you soldered. And finally do not rush, solder everything slowly and make sure that all connections made well.

This mod works perfect for me, I have a good connection with my service provider (ROGERS) the only problem I have is that the signal level is LOW because I do not have an antenna yet and I am using just a piece of wire instead of it.

    Good luck !
    Vinzer

    Congrats, Vinzer - udaman :notworthy:

You clearly put a lot of effort "paving the way", seeing as the OP came & went without leaving too many clues... I second GuruGuy's request for a few pics please! It would be great if you could fill in the missing blanks that flash2light left for the benefit of the 1410/1810 community

Here is the link where I got my mini-pci-e slot:

    HERE

Sim card slot I soldered on the mother board close to the battery. There is a place for it there inside. After I make a pics I will show where is that.
Now I am searching for the antenna :)

quejo - thank you for the link, i think this natenna should work for me

traveller - yes i will post pics and short description of the main parts of this mod. What is most important is that IT FINALLY PROOVEN TO WORK :)

There is an earlier thread about modding 1810tz, which should be identical to 1410. The antennas in use were "Tyco antenna", no idea what it is but lots on eBay. Has to disassemble the whole LCD bezel/panel for installation though -- hope the smaller one work out equally well and save some trouble.

I am not sure since the mini-pci-e connector for the HSPDA modem using only USB connection. Other PCI lines are not attached to it I think (in model 1410 at least what I found). I has been design for cellular modem only.

Using second mPCIe socket as WWAN slot

1410 systemboard picture here confirms that second mPCIe slot is just USB. We can see the USB pin 36 and 38 is connected. The mPCIe pins 21,23, 33,35 are not. Ref mPCIe pinout.

Folks wanting to that socket for WWAN only really need the 2 USB pins 36 and 38, the WWAN_LED, plus GND and 3.3V. So could just wire up a WWAN card using say 80pin IDE cable direct, bypassing the need for a mPCIe socket altogether. Not as neat, but far easier and cheaper.

Sounds interesting. I'm confused as to how you would use an 80 pin IDE cable though. What form factor does the 3G modem come in? Where do those that do the mod actually put the modem module?

Whoops.. I should have elaborated. Can just cut 1 or 5 individual wires of the 80pin IDE (wires) cable to give you a nice and thin ribbon or individual wire. I suggest the IDE cable since the bare ends are ultra fine, perfect for mounting on the tiny mPCIe pads, are available everywhere, cost next to nothing, with possibility of one lying in a box somewhere.

Ok I see what you mean with the IDE cable. So let me get this straight, there's already a free mPCIe slot inside that you can plug a 3G module into but it's missing some connections?

You have free mPCIe pads to host a second WWAN mPCIe socket. It's got the WWAN USB pins wired.

    Quick-and-dirty 3G

The cheapest way to link this up would be to directly solder on the 3G card and a SIM card holder (from an old nokia mobile phone) using IDE cable that could just sit above it. Then pin down the final solution with creative application of sticky tape. Not pretty but can be done with parts you might have at hand. You'd still be missing an antenna, but could swap the nearby wifi antenna leads.

Refer to the mPCIe socket pinouts, noting USB, WWAN, UIM pins. Would also need to match 3.3V and GND pins that are connected on the WWAN card. This circuit showing what pins are matched to the SIM holder.

    The clean 3G solution

The clean solution would be acquiring the correct height mPCIe connector, solder that in place, find an appropriate SIM card holder, solder that in place, that, obtain an additional wwan or wifi antenna, thread that through.

Very interesting mod, and am so tempted to try it. I want to do the bluetooth mod too though that looks much easier.

It seems the mPCIe 3G modem module is quite expensive though, and if you factor it in you're almost better off buying a 3G enable notebook to begin with. Problem is there's a significant price difference between the 1410 and the 3G enabled 1810, if you can find one that is.

If the 1410 was modded to have BT and 3G, it'd be one mean machine.

Good find! I was actually looking up the Huawei EM770 as I thought that was the one they use in the Acer.

The antenna is roughly the same price though, so maybe $100 all up? For $100 it'd be worth the effort.

The problem lies in the lack of detail on how to actually perform the procedure and the difficulty in disassembling/reassembling the notebook for someone who has never opened one before. I mean, I could essentially kill the thing within a week of buying it!

If I were to do it, I'd like to do it the clean way. Are the connections from the existing sim slot pads to the spare mini pciE already there ?

Ok, I'm going to do this!

One problem, I can't find the correct sim card socket! The other thread says not to use the Proconn which is the only one i can find. The one linked in this thread is not available anymore.

I just did the mod using the parts pointed out by vinzer78 earlier in this thread. Besides the bad reception I am fighting with - need to find a better antenna - it works.

Some remarks: As has been posted in another thread, you need to build a jumper in order to supply power to the pci-e adapter. The most convenient way to to this is described here http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5571317#post5571317 - Pin R174 needs to be bridged to get 3.3V.

I also read that no extra power would be needed for the SIM slot, but this was only after I had put a jumper there, too. Next to the pins of the SIM slot there are 6 pads labeled U10; the middle one closest to the SIM slot provides 3.3V.

One nice thing missing here is the fact that the W-LAN switch can be used to turn the WWAN on and off, helping to save energy (thx to tnkgrl). Internally, the original W-LAN switch is a double switch moving right and left. In order to use it both ways, you need to cut the plastic away that mechanically blocks you from sliding the outer button to the left. In principle, the W-LAN button should look square like the Bluetooth button. When you cut the plastic be aware that the button is hollow and that you will create a small opening; I taped it closed from the inside.

You can then switch W-LAN and WWAN individually using the same button, the LED turning blue when the WWAN is on and W-LAN is off.

Wow, I can't believe how much trouble Acer went to prevent people from implementing WWAN... I can only assume Acer's using two distinct bases for the 14/1810T(Z)... :-/

I'm going to do it too. As of this afternoon all parts have been ordered. For the WWAN I chose an unlocked Sierra Wireless U881 that I intend to cannibalize 8781 module from. I Chose this one mainly Because it has the GPS secondly it was available here as opposed to the gpm382 that I would have sent to china for. I got it for 60$ from.

    http://replaceyourcell.com

SIM slot I was able to locate thanks to vinzer78, only in GB. At ebay seller pridopia.

    Mini pcie slot from.

    http://mouser.com.

Antenna I ordered is Tyco that I saw on mod thred from either bbgirl or tankgirl, can't remember. I found a US sorce.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Tyco-Universal-...emQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item4146c1165a

That I intend to run into the lcd panel as per the thred I found them on.
My next step is to do some looking into micro soldering tools/techniques. This will be done on a AS1410 2920 it's brand new But I have added the BT mod and replaced 1g mem with a 2g stick. Will also get another 2g stick and the 1810 battery. Glad I found this thred, It has been a great help so I found out that I shouldn't have to power the sim slot and about the button fix. Is there any thing I left out or should know? I will take pics but don't know if I can do the close-up ones. Sorry about the long links dont know how to fix that.

From the picture you attached.. I think than rather using a different base, they are using a different switch! In your picture, both the bluetooth button and the wireless / 3g seem to be the same size, but the wireless/3g one has space to toogle it right and left.

In my 1810TZ without 3g, the wireless / 3g is bigger than the bluetooth one, and I can toogle it right but not left, since the button is so big it can't go left..

You can see how the button is in this picture

That said.. maybe cutting the button a bit would make it work the same way as in the 3g model..
