My 1410 has a problem with the display out function. It works fine with both the HDMI and VGA output when the lid is open. However, when I close the lid, the display is okay for a couple of seconds then it flashes on and off intermittently on the display that I hooked it up to. It happens with both the VGA and HDMI output signal. It only happens when the lid is closed, even though I set the computer the do nothing when the lid is closed. I thought it might be a software/driver issue, but I installed the most recent chipset and VGA drivers from the acer website with no change. This is an important feature for me to have because I use the computer with an external display the majority of the time. I am running windows 7 home premium 64bit. Their tech support has told me that Acer computers are set to not work with an external display when the lid is closed. I believe they just don't want to fix my computer. Has anyone else run into this problem?

I'm using the VGA out on an external display with the lid closed as I'm typing this.

I hadn't thought of this, so I tried it over the weekend. It was weird because the screen stayed on fine during the bios bootup screen and the windows starting screen, but as soon as it got to the windows login screen, it began doing the intermittent signal.

Could you tell me what OS you're running and your bios version and you VGA driver version?

Windows 7 x64, latest BIOS and driver (updated BIOS last week, just installed new driver yesterday but it was working on the second-newest as well). It doesn't show the BIOS screen, but shows the windows startup and logs in fine.

I am furious at Acer customer service right now. After trying to troubleshoot this problem over email, they eventually told me that the computer wasn't meant to display on an external display with the lid closed. After I told the CSR that I know that's not true, they gave me a phone number to call. After talking to them on the phone, they told me it is a software problem and not a hardware problem and that I would have to pay $59.00 to talk to their software techs to troubleshoot software. They refused to budge after explaining to them that this computer is not even 2 months old and that the feature has never worked. I ended up hanging up on the phone rep with no solution. I love this computer with this will be THE LAST acer product I will ever buy.

Well, you could always do what I do when I run into a pesky problem that no one else has and I can't figure out how to fix... Wipe it and start over. It'll give you a fast, problem-free computer but requires a few hours to apply all the tweaks to get the system customized 'your' way. I now use disk images and wipe the HDD on my main computers weekly :)

@Anthrsckmnd Bad to hear but Acer has generally terrible customer services (my experiences). In one point they are right It's a software problem. Blinking always shows up when is built-in display disconnected from the system (you can notice that when you close the lid a then you look at system devices on external display). This not a big deal for me because I'm not often use this feature but it's malfunction and Acer would solve it in good relationship between him a customers.

Now I've done it. I tried to re-install Windows to get the computer to factory defaults. I tried to run the recovery software and got an error message. I downloaded an iso of home premium and when I tried to install it I get an error message (0x80070570). Now I have a completely unusable computer without any working software, I'm at a complete loss

I am using a Packard Bell Dot M/U (basically same system and specs as the Acer 1810TZ). I have exactly the same problem. I also noticed the on and off problem with the HDMI connection. It does not matter if the lid is closed or open. It is very frustrating because I wanted to use the HDMI out with the external screen (show desktop on screen 2 only option) for two main reasons: better picture quality and less cable clutter (Sound and picture over HDMI).

I am back to the VGA solution for the moment, including an audio out cable for the sound. This is not an ideal solution.

And by the way, if the lid is closed or open, this does not matter. Windows 7 64 bit and all the other Windows 7 power options do have a setting "do nothing when lid is closed", therefore it does not matter if it is closed or not.

Acer should fix this and they should also fix this for their Packard Bell line as well, because those products also suffer from this issue.

I do not have any issues with the picture once I use the VGA out, no blinking, no on and off. This seems to be entirely related to the HDMI implementation. I could not even update to the latest Intel graphics driver 15.17.4.64.2119, dated April 23, 2010. Any attempt to install this driver ends with an error message, despite the fact that this driver is certified for the Intel GS45 Express Chipset. :(

I need to check the version of the driver that is installed on my 1810TZ. It was downloaded from Intel website.
There was no problem to install that driver after uninstalling the existing driver via "Control Panel/Add+Remove Programs".

Interesting, thanks for the information. I have successfully uninstalled the preinstalled driver. Then I got an error message that I should be Admin to remove it completely.

I had to power off the system. After the login, I get these Open File Security Warnung messages after every boot:

"Do you want to run this file? Name: c:\windows\system32\igfxtray.exe"
"Do you want to run this file? Name: c:\windows\system32\hkcmd.exe"
"Do you want to run this file? Name: c:\windows\system32\igfxpers.exe"

I think I am going to uninstall that latest intel driver again. No, it did not work. Uninstalling and reinstalling the latest driver will still give me those error messages every time I reboot. Well another buggy Intel graphics driver, I'll let Windows 7 update the driver. :(

This is the only Intel driver that can be installed on my system without error messages: 8.15.0010.1892

The intel driver update utility even warns me that if I would install another driver, this could create technical issues. Great, I do have technical issues with the vendor's driver. And Acer is not going to update their drivers, I already checked. Packard Bell is not doing anything to solve this isse. What did Acer think when they designed this system? Official intel drivers do not work and I am stuck with the vendor's buggy driver? Great, absolutely great :(.

I can't remember getting such a message. Did you uninstall using "Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs"?
After the required reboot, Windows (Win7 64bit) installed some older driver version (apparently)

I have 15.17.3.64.2104 from Intel website. Installed without any problems. After having installed this driver, there is also a driver update announced in the Windows Update application

I didn't have such a warning. Perhaps it does help if you run the installer "as Administrator".

... another idea: Try the Intel VGA driver provided by Acer for the Aspire 3820T.

well if you haven`t tried may be it would be useful for you to check if the option "turn of display when lid is closed" is checked and uncheck it...
I had similar problem when I closed the lid and picture on my TV would go away every single time...But when I turned of the option from above it worked for me fine...

Try Control Panel, System and Security, Power Options, Change what the power buttons do. There you will find the actions for battery and power plugged in.

I always did try to update the graphics driver as admin. I will give it a try and install that other Acer driver, that was mentioned before.

There I am offered the options
    • do nothing (monitor will still shutdown when closing the lid)
    • standby
    • hibernate
    • shutdown

Normally, this should work. Haven't had any issues with installing the Intel drivers myself.

    @ michael_recycled
Choose the first option and it should work.
The laptop`s display will turn off and on the external display such as tv or monitor it will display the desktop of your laptop (meaning it will not send laptop to sleep or any other mode when you close the lid)...

I'm using Ubuntu Linux and my display is set to "Blank Screen" with lid closed and it works fine with an external display so it's not the computer.

There should be a utility in W7 that handles the monitor settings. I was just playing around with it the other day with an external monitor. (I didn't close the lid so I can't be of much help.)

Okay I got my HDMI to DVI-D adapter now. Same problem, the screen goes blank from time to time. Sometimes it even blinks constantly (black, on, black, on, black on and so on).

I have made a video that I published on youtube if you would like to see how it looks.

YouTube - Packard Bell DOT M/U intermittent picture loss over HDMI port

The problem still exists after a factory restore.

    Hi,

so either there is something wrong with the laptop or with the TV/monitor. Is there any opportunity to try the laptop with another monitor?
Unfortunately I don't have a access to a screen with digital inputs, so I can't test.

Also, you can't rule out the cable and the adapter.

oh, I finally find out I am not the only one. I already wrote in the other thread about this, I tried many monitors and many cables, both dvi and vga same problem. And all settings are ok, drivers always updated, its not a software problem for sure, no overheating either since having fans under the laptop.

Does anyone have a solution for this yet? Hopefully it is not dead yet because I have scoured the earth for a solution and found none.

I think it is a graphics driver thing or a Windows 7 thing. What is weird is that when I hook both the vga and hdmi cables to an external monitor, I can close my lid and use the monitor. That is not a good solution though because there is some background stuff going on with the graphics because the screensaver will never turn on and if you view the graphics setup window it is actively switching constantly.

It seems like Ubuntu handles it much better than Windows 7, but I am not sure where the option to "close lid = do nothing" is.

    Any help?
