I just bought an AS1410 SOLO last month and yesterday it would not boot up at all. Called Acer tech support and they said send in for the warranty work on the notebook. The thing is I have to pay for the shipping and to send in their defective product. Is it Acer policy? If it is then it sucks. I have a ThinkPad T43p and when I needed to send it in for warranty work, Lenovo sent me a prepaid box and all I have to do is drop the box off at any UPS store. I forgot to mention that the tech support personnel, their attitude are like I don't give a damn about your problem, you're already bought our product and you need our support now. So give it another thought before you buy any Acer product.

I've not had to mail mine in, but if I'd have had my way, I'd have cancelled my 1810T that I got today based purely on principle for their not having their manuals available to the public the way Lenovo, HP, or Dell do.
And, I know all 3 of those companies will mail out boxes to have the laptop sent back with. -
It's over 30 days so I'm stuck with the 1410. This is my first and last product that I'm ever going to buy from Acer. Keep the original box because Acer won't send out any box. Event Dish Network send out a prepaid box for its receiver.

I don't understand that... I've sent laptops from Hp, Asus, Acer and/or Samsung and it has always been the same: I had to package the laptop and they sent someone to collect the box (ups or whoever came).
I've never had to pay shipping, never. Acer included..
that's in spain.
BTW, why don't you pay postage and send it? Yes, it's not fair or right, and it costs money, but not having the laptop.. that's worse. Have you tried calling a few times? -
I even talk to the manager and he said that it's their policy. He instructed me to use the original box if you no longer have the box then find some other box, pay the shipping out of your pocket to send it in for warranty work. Of course i'm going to pay for the shipping to send it in it's still cheaper than replace the hard drive myself. Just want to make people aware of their policy. What if Acer doesn't fix it right then I have to keep sending the thing back to them with my own money?
Patrick, what did you send back to Acer? May I quote you when I call Acer again?
Thanks -
Hmm... I also had to pay to send my Acer netbook to them when screen cable tore, but it isn't so bad. After all, Acer is such a bang for the buck my cheap nature wins me over
If the reason you are sending laptop for repair is a malfunctioning HDD then you could always call Acer and have them send you a new HDD (they pay shipping to and from) so you can replace it yourself. I've done that before. -

I've sent some laptops back, hdd failing, screen hinges broken.. I think memory problems, also. They never were my machines, I work in a shop, and I send them from there.
But as I said, always the same: I have to take care of packaging it and put the RMA number outside the box. Then UPS or whoever they send comes, puts stickers on the box and takes it back to where acer repairs them. Once repaired, acer sends it back.
I'm in spain.. I don't know where you are from, but maybe they have different policies in different countries.. I don't know. -
Last time I called them, about 3 weeks ago, their policy is that the will pay for inbound shipping within 30 days of purchasing the unit. I'm in US, not sure about CA but I would quote that and see what they say. You might get lucky.

Dell is the only one that has ever sent me a prepaid box. Asus, Acer, Sony you had to pack it up yourself, but they'd pay the shipping.
-
Acer provided me free shipping both ways for my fix and I'm no VIP

I'm in US and I just called them again last night. Their policy is that they will pay for shipping within 30 days of purchase date. Lenovo sent me a box and free shipping (twice) when I need to send in my laptop for warranty work.

Maybe it's just me, but is it that big a deal to pay to ship a 3lb package?

I agree, it is NOT acceptable. Under warranty it should be covered. Besides, it's not just a few bucks, it's probably closer to $15-$20 depending on where you ship from and to.
