I'm a little torn between the different models of the Acer 1410.
It seems like the common model is the 1410-2285 which is a dual-core celeron (Intel SU2300) but there appears to be other models with a Core2 Solo U2200/U2100.
I'll be using it for mostly older games and such but somewhat newer games would also be nice and I know that not all games (espicially older ones!) do not take advantage of dual core.
Is there much of a difference between the processors?
Also, what is the opinion of the HP Mini 311? (it seems like the Acer is much better despite the nVidia Ion)

I think you mean su3500 as the single core. I've got an 1810t with su3500 and I'm happy with its performance. But if I had to buy now I would take the dual core su2300 version. It gives some more headroom when multitasking. Gaming wise the 4500MHD is the limiting factor so games will be equally fast/slow on both systems. I can't comment on the HP Mini 311.

While I think the ION is a much better GPU option, I still think the Atom is way underpowered. I know it sips power, but if you need it to drive a decent GPU, then you're better off with a more powerful CPU. And as der_mali states, a dual core will probably be better in the long run.
For gaming see this thread I started:

I have played Battlefield 2 on my Acer single core, but then again, I have to run it at minimum detail and resolution (1024x576). Otherwise most games from 2005 and earlier run great.
Acer 1410: Should I get single or dual-core? (ned quick advice!)
