I have a 3 yr old aspire 1640, I am having problems with my wireless connection doping from 54 to 24 or less every few min. doesn't matter time of day.I had my Hp from work connected side by side with my Acer and was monitoring my wireless connection status, the Hp never changed from 54 but my Acer changed all the time.
What kind of issues may I be looking for?

Update Wi-Fi drivers (either from Intel website or from wikidrivers if you have an Atheros Wi-Fi chip).
Check in advanced driver properties if power-saving is disabled for Wi-Fi and if Bluetooth collaboration is enabled (if you use Bluetooth)
Also check Windows power-scheme for any enabled Wi-Fi power-saving features and disable them if present.
