Hello all. I am looking for a notebook in the $1k price range. I came across this and so far have read nothing but good reviews.

I will be using this in a small office, teamed up with a desktop to store the important data.

Does this look like a good deal, or do you have any recommendations?

    Thanks a bunch.

I think Acer offers good price/quality ratio. If you want top quality look at IBM or Fujitsu, but that will cost you a few hundred more. As always be sure to backup your important data. One I ran accross lately is:

Has a 5400RPM hard drive for a nice performance boost, but does not have the glossy screen like the Acer. HP's business class are better built than Acers and it has a three year warranty. Good Luck.

I was robbed by a sweet little old lady on a motorized cart and I didn't even see it coming.

I think I am going to end up ordering the Asus W3. It's more than I need, but it's packed with features, and I think would last me a long time.

From what I read, it seems the W3's main advantage is only a higher CPU speed, and high RAM (the RAM issue can be solved by upgrading), however, the W3 only has a 14" monitor as opposed to the widescreen 15.4" on the 1681. Plus, the 1681 also comes with the same Radeon 9700 as the W3. At least mine does! I'd think for office work, it's quite nice to have a nice big screen.

If the Acer still offered teh dedicated video, I would have went with that. However, every place I have contacted now only offers the shared video memory version. I still think the Acer can be very good... just not for games i will be playing time to time.
