First some history. I've had a 1711sci for about six months now and this is the second problem I've had with it. The first was considerable flickering when on battery power, even when there was a remaining charge of 75%. It went to Acer for repair but I was told this was normal. Hmm. Ok, so I've lived with it (I don't use battery power). Yesterday the LCD went very dim (mostly the top half) and lost contrast. I reloaded the NVidia driver, and booted in safe mode as well, but the problem persisted.
Has anyone had these problems, and if so, what were the corrective measures to resolve them?

Sounds like eitehr the FL Inverter or LCD backlight is about to go. Either one of these things can cause flicker when they start to go. It's just like the flourescent lights in an office, when the bulb starts to burn out, it flickers. It's also possible the FL Inverter is not providing enough power to the backlight. Have Acer replace both the FL Inverter and LCD (backlight encased in the LCD housing), this should probably fix your problem.
Oh, and flickering is not normal.

Thanks, Vb. I'm on the horn with them first thing. I appreciate your comments.

Well the notebook has been at Acer since last Thursday, and I spoke with them this morning. What I know at this point is they've ordered an FL inverter for it, which is supposed to be there by tomorrow, but I don't know if that's the extent of the repair. So you were right, Vb. I just hope this thing doesn't become problematic now that somehting has fried.

It shouldn't cause additional problems because of this failure. The FL Inverters have a lot of power flowing through them. Since it didn't POP and was just starting to fail, it was most likely a manufacturing defect.
