Hi guys I would really appreciate some help with my laptop problem.

I usually use my laptop before bed, close it on battery, then use it the next day without issue for a year or more now. I assume it goes into sleep mode.

However I woke up to what seemed to be a dead battery the other morning. So I plugged in, however when I powered on the laptop would not get to the Windows 7 screen:

    - It would go to the first screen with the white Acer logo
    - Then a line would flash a few times on the very top left of the screen
    - Then the screen goes black
    - Touching the power button here kills it instantly.

A quick Google brought up a number of things to try, the most legitimate seemed to be booting in safe mode and to try repair from the Windows 7 disk. Booting in safe mode, which I was told is F8, did nothing, brought me to the same blinking curser than blank screen. The repair failed and told me: http://oi45.tinypic.com/2lj4wf9.jpg

So where do I go from here? Obviously I want to get this unit running again, if nothing else, get what's on the hard drive off.

    Thanks a lot in advance.

Take the HDD out and connect it to another computer- this one will likely require an OS reinstall (including format).
You may try to use recovery partition at boot but there is also a chance that your HDD might be on its way out.

The best thing to do would be to connect the HDD to another computer, copy what you need and check HDD SMART proceed from there.
If the HDD itself is fine a simple reinstall will do- otherwise you'd need a new HDD.

Thanks, although this involves me purchasing another computer (currently posting from my phone!) it sounds like a safe bet and something that might be needed anyway.

How exactly would I go about getting the files from the old computer to the new one? I am sure I could take the HD out but I am not sure about how to hook it up or transfer the files. Sorry about my lack of computer knowledge.

    Thanks :)

USB-ATA/SATA bridge is a useful investment.
You can use it to connect any ATA notebook or desktop drive and any SATA drive (including optical drives) to any USB equipped system.

I wouldn't buy a new computer now. Buy the bridge and use any computer (friend's or something) to back up your important data and then try to re-install Windows.
Chances are that's all what's needed.

Thanks for the reply. Not having the cable I ended up using Ubuntu to get my files off via USBstick..... I haven't reinstalled Windows yet but I am assuming it will solve the problem. Thanks again.

You could also try repair and/or reinstall using a usb flash drive with the windows installation disc on it.

Link here: Install Windows 7 From USB

Of course will still take a working computer to get the usb drive set up.
