So my friend told me the other day that if I got the data off of the hard drive of his old laptop, I could have it. He said it just quit working one day. Now, knowing my friend, and knowing that he isn't computer saavy at all, I'm hoping that it's an easy fix. I need to pickup a laptop hard drive to IDE adapter so I can see if the data is there. He misplaced the A/C adapter, so I don't have any way of turning the computer on to see what's wrong or I would try that first. One part of me wants to buy an A/C adapter to see if it'll boot to Windows and the other part of me says I should get the hard drive adapter first and worry about fixing it later. This is a crazy question, but does anyone have a spare charger just laying around? Is there any other mystical way to get the battery charged without forking out $50 for a new A/C adapter. His HP charger for his new laptop won't work, my Sony charger won't work, and my dad's Dell charger won't work.

you'll have to find a charger somewhere.... maybe borrow one from another acer owner....
first thing i'd do is remove the HDD buy the correct type of UBS HDD enclouser either IDE or SATA... depends on the HDD TYPE in his laptop
then use the enclosuer to gain access to the data and back it up to CD or DVD... ,,, then take possesion of your new toy -
It's a 40gb Hitatchi Travelstar IDE drive. I think I'm going to go ahead and have him order a 2.5" laptop IDE to desktop IDE adapter cable so I can install the in my desktop and move the data to a flash drive. The adapters are only $10-$12 in comparison to the enclosures which run $30+.
I don't know of anyone local right off hand that uses Acers. I was hoping someone would have an old busted one or something and could let me have the charger for cheap.
Thanks. -
www.geeks.com has usb enclosures for under $10
