OK, in plain English, with no mention of pinmods etc, what can go in this?

The sticker on the ram has two references:

    554E1010015430136EKS00
    MBA74010015430136EKS00

And the manufacture date seems to be late 05.

I'm not massively worried about a major speed increase, more a cooler running less battery killing CPU. From reading on here it seems a 725A should work, but what about a 725? i can't seem to find any differences between the two other than model number!

Stripping the whole thing to change the CPU isn't a prospect that thrills me, so I want to be sure I'm fitting something that works, and as I'm tight I want to be buying as cheap as possible - Seems there's a few s/h 725 CPUs kicking around cheaper than 725A's at the moment :)

    (Pin-mod is not possible)
I can't find any info regarding a BIOS update w.r.t. to CPU upgrades, but the 7x5 dothans should be compatible.
I am not sure, but it is better to stick with the 725A, since it is listed as fully compatible.
And the 725A is a revised version of the 725, due to the higher CPU-stepping.
The other dothans might work, since the 745A is listed as a replacement/spare part here (KC.NA001.745).

    Useful link, thanks.

Guess I'll wait for a cheap 725A to appear. Someone on here seems to have some Youtube vids about the 3610, but I'm not looking to push the max out of it, just eek a little extra go when needed and battery when not :)

Well, a cheap 725 came up on ebay and arrived in the post this morning.

Fitted it this evening (I didn't much enjoy stripping the whole thing just to get to the CPU, but it took just under an hour I think) and yay, it works :)

The laptop does feel a little more responsive but that might just be me. Temps are a little lower but not by a vast amount, and hard to judge as the radiator was clogged with fluff before I did this.

It was good to see 590Mhz showing in the system properties though, means in theory at least less heat, less battery drain, so more like a portable computer instead of a miniture oven with an electric thirst!

The clogged heatsink is something that we all faced , by the one way or the other .. :D

I got my laptop second hand , and it was super clogged ... it looks that the old owner had the laptop over his bed ..

    Take care ..
