Thanks to the good reviews on this forum, I upgraded my WD 80gb 5400rpm hard drive today to this 100gb Hitachi Travelstar 7k200 off newegg:
    http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16822145181

Installed it today, WOW   :D What a great improvement and seamless install. Im using the laptop right now and the difference is night and day.

Vista is working a lot better with the faster hard drive (7200rpm) and with the 16mb cache, Im getting MUCH better response times. +1 for the recommendations on this drive.

I will report back later this week when my Duo-core processor comes in the mail. Im going to yank the Celeron M out of here and upgrade it to the 1.6ghz duo-core :D Again, I wouldnt have this knowledge if it wasnt for this forum and the intelligent members it contains!- Thanks everybody!

that's super cool and I'm happy for you!

has anyone else found it odd that other 5400RPM drives, the one's running the super high density platters (ie. WD Scorpio 320GB 5400RPM 8MB) that actually perform as well as the mobile 7200RPM drives in most things but burst speed benchmarking, only come with 8MB of cache? I wonder what kind of boost it would give them if they had 16MB? surely the added memory is cheaper then the necessary parts to boost a drive upto 7200RPM!

Yep, 7200rpm drives offer quicker access times. I easily give up the difference in storage space for the quicker access time but that is what suits my needs.

Well after I got home tonite, I played with the laptop some more and man, what a great difference.I can now open multiple "tabs" in IE7 and not cause it to stop responding or get any lag at all. Vedy vedy impressive.

Again, I have a duo core processor coming in the mail. I cant wait to see the difference when I yank this nasty Celeron M out and put in a duo-core

how did you replace the drive? I have a 3680 and when I took the drive out, there was a different attachement on the HD. is there anyway I can take that off?
