It should be. I ordered some too and it should be arriving today. It was backordered for a couple weeks now, then it was $64.99.

My Acer will be here tomorrow and Fry's hasn't even processed the RAM order yet.If I get the computer with 512MB tomorow maybe Vista will finish booting by the time the IGB gets here from Frys in a couple days.

Well I'm typing on a 3680-2022 right now with 512 MB. It really is not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. After trashing the Acer "empowering" software it is pretty snappy.

All the Empowering stuff, norton (of course - what a piece of bloatware garbage - AVG Free = Good / Norton = BAD), Some sort fo acer Arcade thing, the acer registration popup software. I think that was it.

I installed the memory last night and it's working just fine.

I also upgraded my CD/DVD drive to a DVD burner. I got a Samsung Model SN-S082D/BEBN from Newegg for around 50 bones shipped.

I think I'm set as far as upgrades for a while. Since I got mine before x-mas it came with XP home. I wiped it and put XP Pro on it. I should be getting the upgrade to Vista soon, but I'm not sure if it's worth installing. I might hold off a while.

The best part about Vista is the instant sleep function IMHO. I would install it just for that feature. Ohh and at least on my 3680 the NIC comes out of the sleep state just fine and reconnects to the network without issue (not the case for all nics from what I read up on when dealing with the Gateway I returned)

It takes forever to boot the first time.I'll play with Vista a for awhile but I'll probaly wipe it and use XP when I start using it for real.

I have the same question as 'bargle150'. Mine came loaded with Vista and it's a DOOOOOG. It takes about 20min. to boot up (no joke!).

I would be ecstatic if I could wipe Vista and install XP.

I finally went with a dual boot with XP on a 3rd partition I created for now.I don't want to wipe the hard drive until I'm sure I know what I'm doing.I've made an Acronis image so I should be OK but I'd really like to be a little more knowledgable before i take an irreversible step.
To be fair I haven't contacted Acer directly yet,I was hoping I could pick up the info without the hassle of dealing with moronic service reps.Any other sources of info on ACer or laptops in general out there where I might be able to get some help?

I've been playing with Vista and burn-in testing the 3680-2022 and so far so good.

You can turn Vista's GUI off for the most and revert it to the look of XP, and Vista has multiple old Windows compatibility modes to run older software. Also, Vista Basic comes with more functions buried in it that they say are not in it per the Microsoft Vista website, e.g. the RUN command and DOS is there, but its not easy to find unless you use the XP interface.

Basic actually is well suited for the 3680 since it doesn't really have the horsepower for video editing [it can be done, but it takes too long], but its fine for multimedia and working simultaneously.

So far, I ported 20 Win3x and XP apps, and only one Windows 3.0 app didn't work. I know the real acid test is games, but I don't play games, just a lot of number crunching and text applications.

The base 512M actually runs well until you switch applications, then the disk swap engages and at times a long wait ensues. So I upgraded to 1 G for $40 [ buy 1 512M module] and Vista Basic in 'XP' mode sings. I like it a lot and many things missing in Basic in terms of utilities can almost easily be obtained free from the Open Source versions.

For example, instead of Bit-locker, use Truecrypt. Instead of Defender, user Spybot S&D [ it also improves performance as Defender seems to Defend a bit too often].

I've just completed a 7 day burn in, but that doesn't include a 24/7 disk run yet.

I just bought a 3680-2633 (1.6ghz Celeron) Before I even had the laptop delivered, I bought 2GB of PC-5300 ram. I dont know if it helped or not because I replaced the RAM before the first boot-up :D

Anyways, I appreciate the advice on removing the pre-installed Acer junk. Even with 2GB of ram and supposedly "256mb of shared video ram" DVD's still get slow and sketchy on this machine. Not very happy about that! Will be uninstalling unnecessary preloaded crap soon.
