Well currently this is the only way of getting hold of a 3820TG in north america, unless acer somehow magically decides to release it in the near future, which is highly unlikely. That's all we've got :( hopefully, people who has ordered one can share their experiences. BRONSKY WHERE ARE YOU

Is there any compatibility problems when ordering one from computeruniverse?

    Like keyboard or adapter?

How about like they won't ship to the US or Canada anymore. I would call that a big compatability problem. :D

    Bronsky

And yes, both the keyboard and the lower plug are incompatable in the US and have to be changed.

My way works. Fly to China, buy one, bring it back. I'm actually doing that. For real. Leaving August 12th.

Then again, my entire family is there. So, it's not like the trip is just for a laptop.

There's this site, ZOL, which is like the equivalent of... maybe Amazon here, except they are pretty much solely a sales listing site. On there, you can find many sellers in every major city. So, I'm getting mine from the first store I can physically find. For example, the following links to sellers in Beijing:

    ¡¾Acer 3820TG 452G32Mn ±¨¼Û¡¿Acerºê³ž ±Ê¼Ç±¾µçÄÔ¼Û¸ñ-ZOLÖйشåÔÚÏß

Price is phenomenal too. $5900 RMB is $910 CAD or $870 USD (approx), tax included. Also get things like a bag, mouse, mousepad, earphones, etc. That's like a $750 CAD computer here off the shelf, because adding 13% tax and environment protection fee or whatever onto it gets it over $900. Granted, though, it's 2G RAM (but apparently it's 1x2G stick so you can easily add one more in), and a slow 320GB hard drive which .. I could upgrade anyway to an SSD or Momentus XT.

It was the Canadian Customs that effed everything up. They would not let a single unit into Canada from Germany. I think becuase they were sent post. They obviously enforce the Li battery rule on commercial aircraft and Computeruniverse would not ship UPS or FedEx (which would probably add a premium of another $75 but they ship on their own planes). Only one unit was every turned back from the US, that was in New England and I suspect it came in through Canada. The others made it through US customs with no problem. When Computeruniverse got the Canadian models back, they stopped shipping to the US and Canada. End of the road for the German option! I am just glad I ordered mine when I did and that I don't live in Canada. :D

    Bronsky

@Jamus28 - the chip shop are the same people as Computeruniverse. My CU account works on their site.

That's the reason I'm a hesitating buying from overseas - as far as I know they don't have global warranties. Just Asus does.

And I agree with you about Canadian customs. That, and retarded Quebec laws which forbids the selling of US keyboard layouts in laptops... If it wasn't for that I would've cracked and gotten the (admittedly cheap) 5470 model by now.

The Acer global warranty is a "travelers warranty". Not quite the same as the Asus or HP global warranties. In dealing wtih Acer USA, I am finding that they are very balkanized. They can't even ID a device by serial number that was sold outside the PanAmerican region.

Ok my 3820TG has arrived from the PCHome store in Taiwan after exactly 2.5 days from the time of the order.

It's using a chinese windows though so just reinstalling Win7 Pro and then I'll try some burn tests.

Is there any reason in particular that Acer is refusing to sell this in the US?

Spec wise, the 3820 is sort of a dream machine. Ultra portable with power and very decent battery life. What gives?!

If this were available here now, I'd probably opt for it over the Envy 14 I'm most likely going to order come Sunday. I really don't want to jump through the hoops of ordering intenationally seeing as I'll have limited support with it from Acer.

You've officially broken my heart Acer.

(psst, hey Asus! Throw in a 330M in the U35 and you'll be my hero!)

alot of reasons behind why acer isnt releasing 3820TG in north america and asus using 310M instead of 330 or 335M has to do with consumer preference and profit maxization. Think about it, if they use a 330M in U35 and sell it for a higher price, they will lose alot of customers, that doesnt need a powerful GPU. they will instead go for a Acer 3820T or Toshiba R700 instead for example. In the case of acer, their market share in US just isnt high enough to be releasing multiple models every year. majority of consumers will still purchase Hp or Dell over acer just because more people use hp and dell.

I suppose it makes sense, I just wish they would have released the 3820tg instead of the 4820tg. This is kinda like how asus says consumers don't want to spend more on higher quality displays, so they don't even offer the option. I'm no business buff so I can't say what's best in their money making interests but one of the reasons I'm getting the Envy 14 over the 4820tg is because it has a higher quality screen. I can't speak for everyone though.

As for a 13" notebook I'd be fine with the 720p display, btw. For 14" and bigger though I'd prefer a higher resolution.

Is that all speculation or has this been confirmed by Acer? that the 3820TG will not be coming to the US?

Because I'm sort of waiting for the 3820TG to eventually hit the US, but if it's just wishful thinking... I'll move on to my next choices, compromise with a larger 4820TG or live with integrated graphics 3820T or Toshiba R700

There's a local computer store that also has a shop located in Taiwan. They sell the 3820T at the moment, so I asked if they are also able to get the 3820TG. The rough quotes seem to be quite pricey compared to Computeruniverse. Another minus is less RAM and weaker CPU's. The store is an authorized reseller of ACER, so at least I would have a waranty. I'll keep everyone posted if anything comes of this enquiry.

Here's their response so far :
    --------------------------------------
Yes. Now we are carrying the Acer 3820 laptop, but unfortunately since like only Taiwan and Hong Kong have the "TG" series.

We do have a store in Taiwan, so I already email our Taiwan store and ask if they can get 3820TG and ship it to Canada.

3820TG have 3 different models (only CPU different) :

    3820TG-352G50nc (i3-350M 2.26GHz)
    3820TG-432G50nd (i5-430M 2.26GHz / Turbo 2.53GHz)
    3820TG-5452G50nsse (i5-450M 2.4GHz / Turbo 2.66GHz)

    Display: LED 13.3' 1366x768
OS: Windows 7 HP 64 (Chinese version)
    Video Card: ATI HD 5650 1G DDR3
    RAM: 2G DDR3 1066 (up to 8G 2x4G)
    HD: 500G SATA
    Other: 1.83kg, 6-cell 8hours, wireless b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, 5 in 1 card
    reader,3 USB 1 HDMI 1 VGA

I am still waiting for Taiwan's reply, if is possible to get it shop to
here, the price will be roughly about between CA$1300 to CA$1450 before tax (include shipping), and you probable will need to buy a English version of Windows 7. We can do the instillation for you.

Again, these are all base on if we can get that laptop ship to Canada. Will let you know as soon as we got respond from Taiwan.

    Thank you,

    1400CAD=1350USD,

expensive, especially when you have to upgrade ram.

PChome is still a better deal.

Actually, a majorly better deal. Conversion rate is in USD favor now, and price shipped from pchome is $1115. wish I had my money now.

Here's todays response from this local computer store in Vancouver :
    --------------------------------------------
Just want to give you an update regarding the Acer 3820TG laptop.

I just got a respond from our Taiwan store, and sounds like they pertty sure they can get the 3820TG-352G50nc (i3-350M 2.26GHz) model and the price is about CA$1190 before tax (include shipping), and they will let me know if they can get the i5 version or not tomorrow. Will give you an update after that.

Has any Canadian successfully imported a 3820TG into the country successfully yet? I'm almost ready to cave and get the $800 Staples model with the weaker video card

    Hey Hardcor,
I would also love to know which shop this is in Van city as i'm close. The i5 3820tg with the 5650 would be unreal and finally maybe us Canadians could win a battle up here.

Sorry for withholding the name of the shop. There's no sense everybody flooding this guy the same questions on MAYBE being able to import an item they don't actually currently stock, this will probably only drive the owner nuts and slow down the whole process.

I'm just waiting for a final response from the store on prices. I will then ask them if a group order would help lower the cost due to this stores shipping costs.

    I'll keep everyone posted.
