To everyone,
Ultimately, do we need anything more than the i3 cpu for SC2 on high-settings?
-
SC2 is a lot more CPU intensive when it comes to large numbers of units on a map. If you have an i3, you might consider lowering the Effects and Physics settings to Medium if you want a higher framerate.
-
As expected... Cendirect price back down to 745..
Netbooks with N270/280/450/etc processors can handle HD video lol... HD video really just depends on your drivers, codecs, etc... if all you do is watch HD videos, an i3 processor is overkill
.
At medium to high textures and graphics, an i3 should be fine. But I would be more concerned with the i3s temperature than its performance. Can you keep it cool under/around 85C? Can you prevent it from throttling? If you answered yes, go for the i3. If you're not sure, wait for an i5 3820TG to hit the states.
(PC Home seems like a reliable spot but $1050+ seems kinda pricey when I can get an i3 from Cendirect for $790.. and i'm a lot more comfortable having this laptop shipped from Canada than from Taiwan across an ocean lol...) -

It think the I3-370M processor is powerful enough to handle all of the functions that would be encontered by a student. The only place where we have seen the I3 struggle is in gaming due to the severe thermal limitations of the CPU's design. The thermal limitations are most pronounced in the 4820TG. The cooling system of the 4820TG has difficulty keeping the operating temps of the I3 under its max temp of 90C or its IGPU limit of 85C (the refreshed 4820TG is not even offered with an I3 in the US). The 3820TG has a much better cooling system. It may have a lot less difficulty keeping these temps below throttling range.
The problem is that we haven't seen a lot of I3 3820TGs. With the Canadian unit now available, I suspect that this is no longer going to be the case. It will be interesting to see how the I3 performs in the 3820TG.
I'll defer to the gamers. I've never even loaded a game on my 3820TG
. I really suspect that there are not going to be a lot more changes to Acer's distrubution channels for the rest of this year. So, the option is an I5/4820TG from the US, an I3/3820TG from Canada or an I5/3820TG from Taiwan. The availability of the I3 from Canada for under $750 makes me think that it is the way to go and if the power is insufficient, you can always put a 540M in there for around $200. I loved the 540M in my TimelineX.

I wonder who bought the 4 units at the higher price?
It's an odd way to price your units.

Is anyone else seeing the $745 cendirect price? I was going to buy the laptop today after reading the price drop but am seeing a price of $775.
-
Still $775 for me.
On a more interesting note, these guys are pretty much 10 mins away from me....
Will call them Monday morning!
LU Computers -
It shows item back ordered. Let us know when they plan to get these in stock.
-
It's backordered because there was no stock. I'm assuming all these small computer shops all carry 'phantom stock', they drop ship it from major suppliers like ASI and Supercom.
-
Wow - $755 shipped to NJ UPS 3 day service. Nice deal.
Bronsky
-
Ya. That's not bad at all. Has anyone ordered from LU before?
-
A quick search shows a few good and bad reviews on the site. Overall it seems fine. However, I have put in a price match at cendirect to see if they will price match with LU ($780 CAD shipped to Maryland 3-day UPS).
-
Good idea. Lemme know how it goes. I'm really interested in saving $3-400 over getting the E14, and nearly half the price of a G53.
-
Thanks man appreciate the response.
Can anyone tell me the difference between 5650 and 5470 graphic? -
5650 is MUCH better for gaming. Around double the performance I believe.
-
Is it possible to add a new graphic card down the road if I needed to? Have a PS3 for gaming but I do look at a lot of HD photos online. Think the I5 can handle that though.
-
If anyone is interested, i'm passing through Hong Kong on my way back from travelling for 6 months and plan on picking up about 3 of these units. I talked to one shop and they sell them for around $950 US with 1 year international warranty, but after customs i'm not sure what the price will come out to. I'll be getting home on the 27th of October.
I live in Vancouver, Canada. And will only do face-face sales. Sorry to the others.
If interested just shoot me an email : [email protected]
might take a few days to get back to you, because i'm still travelling. -
Not without a factory at your disposal. The GPU is soldered in-place and can not be changed.

So these Canadian I3's should be shipping today - Right? Could you confirm no bluetooth (can't figure why they would leave that out). Also let us know if they can be OC'd. Anybody switching CPU's could you check the id on the clockgen. The clockgen location is id'd in one of Tgoode's posts in the 3920TG owner's thread.

So the only thing I need if I were to buy a Canadian laptop is the outlet plug to US?
Sorry so many questions I just really want this laptop. -
Same. I've recently re-fell-in-love with the 3820TG seeing as many users are able to actually mess with clocks here, unlike the E14 which is locked by HP, and also has a lower clocked GPU.
But someone's gotta confirm whether or not the models that one can get shipped to the US from anywhere besides Taiwan/Germany can OC. -
Well for you Canadians, Staples has the I5 with 5470 on their site for 699.99 Why can't they ship to the U.S!!
STAPLES | BUREAU EN GROS -
Hey all,
The one that's sold on LU Computers: LU Computers, is this the same model 3820-7360W7HP/LX.PV102.288 that everyone has confirmed to be OC-able (please note that I would be replacing the cpu with an 450m or above)? -
That's been on sale for weeks now, and Staples has $20 off $150 coupons (individually generated), so people have stacked them and gotten it as low as $620~
But the 5470 ain't no 5650
-
I couldn't find anything in their policies about price matching - and I've already placed my order - AND my bank already did the wire transfer - but I linked them to LU to see if they can do a price match anyway. :x
We'll see what happens! -
They are the same model. You'll have to wait till somebody gets one. Even then, you understand that OC'ability is a somewhat random feature. I haven't yet seen a 3820TG that will OC, but the clockgens are whatever Acer had available during that production period. I think it's wise to see what the first Canadian units can do before ordering one. You should know soon.

Hopefully these canadian models get shipped to the USA without a problem, especially without any hidden custom/duty fees.
I'll hold onto my 4820TG a bit longer and when an i5/5650 is finally available from Canada, i'll bite. I just couldn't resist the i5 460M / 5650 for $750 out the door from newegg
.
GL to all of you with CA orders! -
Anybody have confirmation yet that CenDirect has shipped any units? Did I read that units ship Canadian post and USPS? Should take awhile.
Bronsky
-
Still waiting for my wire transfer to go through. It's already 2pm there so I'm annoyed. :|
-
Also picked up one of the $750 4820TG's from Newegg (to go along with the i3-350m/5650 3820TG from PCHome). Should be here within a few hours.
Funny that it takes about the same amount of days to ship a laptop from NJ to FL that it does from Taiwan to FL. 5 days Vs 6, both including weekends, but the 6 day trip spent 3 of those days at JFK customs. -
I'm buggin out right now on deciding whether to order a 3820TG (only i3-370m is available from Canada, right?) or a 4820TG from within the US.
-
I've never seen anyone so tortured by a decision before.

Just got a response from cendirect.
I do not know if all the reasons apply but the URL was given and I put in the price without shipping but they may have wanted the price with shipping. Can't get past the no stock reason though. -
I'm posting this from my newly arrived cendirect 3820TG.
I would have posted an hour ago, if it hadn't been for the network drivers\! -
Have I mentioned that I hate bilingual keyboards?
-
Pictures? Also, when did you purchase it?
-
Any problems with customs? And how long did shipping take? (Still awaiting mine to be shipped.) -
If you replace the bilingual KB with a US keyboard, do you need to reset anything or will it just work with the \ and Enter working properly or do you have to reroute the Enter and \ keys?
Congratulations on your 3820TG. Did you go and pick it up?
Bronsky
-
This doesnt' sound too good. Would like to get an answer as soon as possible. I would not like to be stuck with the bilingual KB.

No duties - I am in Canada
Ordered last Monday, in stock and shipped friday, arrived today
No pictures - it looks just like every other 3820TG -
@tgoode
have you replaced the bilingual KB board? Based on that response, it sounded like you did and everything worked after changing the settings. I was wondering if you had a picture of the bilingual keys. If not, that's fine. Thanks! -
I ordered a 3820tg off Cendirect on saturday night and they will be shipping on tuesday. I live in PA, so I'll let you all know how it goes when it gets here if others haven't already gotten theirs.
Also, the 745 price from Cendirect seemed to be incorrect, I ordered at that price but was told it was a miscalculation.
Bronsky I think Acer needs to hire you as a sales rep
-
Incorrect as in you were charged the 775 price?
-
I replaced it on my other3820TG, changed the setting and it worked right away. I have ordered another pair if 3810 backlit kb, one for a spare, one for this machine.
My i7 620m arrived as well... That's going in on the weekend when I start the overnight shift. -
Hi tgoode,
I also am canadian and have on order a 3820TG with the 5650 video card. Previously I had the staples model with the 5470. Did the candian model you received from cendirect come with BT by any chance? I know the staples one had BT 3.0 as a nice bonus, I'm crossing my fingers that that canadian 5650 model has it also. -
That is correct, I was charged 775 CAD
-
Calbino, did you email Cendirect to get your shipping date? Also, how much did you pay? $745 or $775?
I ordered the $745 stock and the shipping date is still up in the air.
