As I'm also in the Montreal area, I am very interested in this development. Well no need for shipping, I can just pick it up :)

If you are permitted to reveal his identity, or where we can contact him, I would really appreciate it if you can PM me.

On an other note, sad to hear about no BT, but to me it wasn't a big issue. I have an iPhone 4 (with its abysmal BT features), so no problem for me. Might be interested down the road getting the internal BT module. Just a quick question on that: does the module specified by bronsky (it's for 1810 and 1410 I think) also work on the 3820TG?

Finally, the i3 is similar to the i5. The i5 is specifically interesting for people looking for OC'ing and turbo mode, but that's it.

Anyone want to do a local deal and buy my AS3820TG-7360? Yes this is the one with the i3 370M, ATI HD 5650, etc. I just received it today and its still sealed with receipt. I just want to sell it for exactly what I paid for it (I bought it from anitec for 760.95, 1.20 environmental fee, and 12% tax here for $853.61 CDN after taxes). I waited about two weeks to get this laptop in, but during that time I stumbled upon a great deal for a sony Z. I am in Vancouver, BC and I prefer not to ship, but if any of you live close to the border and want to come up I'm happy to sell it to you face to face. I guess this counts as another purchase option (buy it from me ha ha)

Does anyone know if the Canada Post tracking number works all the way from Canada to my door? The last update is a definitive
and I dunno if it's gonna pick up when it starts movin' again or if I'm gonna get another tracking number.

The UPS link given in the CenDirect order only shows the movement of the shipment from Acer to CenDirect. It said "Delivered" same day. :\

EDIT: Of course, it IS Sunday.. we'll see what happens tomorrow.

FedEx = USPS = slow. If you're using any of those options, expect it to arrive in no less than 1 week total. Or, at least that's been my experience in ordering from woot.com

Thanks for that. That shows the next piece of my puzzle, since I haven't gotten to the "Item has arrived at postal facility" part yet.

Looks like I can expect it Wednesday-Friday if the delivery timeline holds. Hopefully some of the accessories I ordered will arrive first. :p

Yah, also, you should plan to be home to pick up your pkg, because USPS will prolly leave it at the door, or they might leave you a slip to pick it backup at the post office (which is kinda inconvenient, cuz you have to take the day off to go pick it up anyways).

if i purchase the i3-370M version is the mobo the same as the other processor versions?,

like i know people have bought different CPU's and put them in the i3 model but how does that fair against say the normal i5/i7 versions like what are the differences internally if any?

posted same question in owners lounge

the actual mobo may not be the same, but what matters is that the socket is the same (PGA988). in theory, you should be able to put in any CPU that is socket PGA988. however, some of the newer cpus will probably need a BIOS update

They are identical ... both use a PGA 988 bracket for the Arrandale CPU/IGPU. You can swap in any of the Dual Core CPU/IGPU units.

Oh i know that the socket is what matters and i know people have done the swap, but my question was for like the other internals like will it hinder performance of the new CPU put in.

Like even though you are able to put another one in would the machine function just as good as if you were to buy it oem like that, or will the internal differences knock down performance?

The factory installs the I7 on the same motherboard as the I3. The changes to the motherboard over a model number's life do not affect the performance of one CPU vs another.

Thanks for the information bronsky and i wouldn't really care about the warranty as if i get one i want to do the back-lit keyboard modification :).

It's just i have been looking at the i3 versions and they are <800 dollars from Canadian websites and that is the cheapest i can find, and i figured i could just make upgrades along the way.

Yea ... I kinda did just that to mine. I would keep it perfectly stock at first, however, just to make sure it works perfectly. Then start the modifications. The BL KB is the single best improvement I've done to my 3820TG. I love it. I can use my notebook anywhere, under any conditions.

Canadian Retailers have the 3820TG in stock (I3-370M/HD5650). Many of them will ship to the US. You can get it for under $800 plus around $60 shipping. Take a look at the first page of this thread. I have been updating it for MyonlySt4r.

I'm just wondering... why can't you get this in the US? It's a great product, but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

The only things I found relatively close were:
    - Preorder on amazon for 4820
    - Preorder on newegg for 4820

I bought my laptop in November 2007, and don't know if what I paid ($700), was a "sale" price or not at Fry's. Do retailers/resellers decrease prices for the holidays, or do they up the prices?

Assuming you never heard of black friday. It's one awesome day for shopping, retailer slash their prices on (almost) everything in their store. And most of the time when new game console are released it is usually around the holiday season. Prices for those don't change but they just get more sales. I'm applying that concept to laptops. Not sure if its true though.

You're in Canada right? They don't have something like that?

If you have any doubts about putting in a backlit KB - don't! There is too much that can go wrong and your warranty is void if it does. Trust me, you can live without it.

Wrong thread but basically nothing. While an SSD is supposed to be lower power draw, many seem to draw the same or more as a hard drive under load. They go back to idle quicker though. You'd see something like 2W load, 0.5W idle which is just slightly lower than a 2.5" hard drive. 1.8" disk drives typically run at something closer 1o 1.5W load.

The CPU and GPU shouldn't run any cooler with an SSD, but the SSD itself should be cooler, depending on model, than a mechanical drive and in turn, the chassis near the drive slightly cooler. Battery life should be like 2-3% higher tops.

Buy SSD for performance, not battery life or cooling.

Is it better to order from cendirect (canada) or pchome (taiwan)? Or is it completely dependent on what processor and what bilingual keyboard you want?
