I would think it would drop right in ... only the backlit models need adjustment. Keep us informed. Thanks.

yup will do, i leave canada for chicago tomorrow, and i believe ill have the keyboard by thursday, so ill probably do the swap on fri night or sat.
-
About these backlit KB's, I can't find any canadian multilingual ones. You know, some of us Canucks actually do write in french
Anyone? -
Not a chance.
-
How long did it take for anyone elses order from LU Computers to ship? I ordered on Saturday and as of today it's still "In Process".
Thanks -
Why do all these AS3820T's show them having HD 5650? I thought only AS3820T G's did? At least in US you can buy an AS3820T but all I can tell is that it includes Intel GPU only.
-
I looked at the first to buying options and the second comes out cheaper, the ncix! I can get it shipped to my door for $745.59 USD it says. Anyone have any experience with ncix? I really want this offer.
How much different is the canadain keyboard to the english? -
As long as it isn't french canadian it should be fine. And do you have a link to the model you're referring to? Make sure it isn't one with only Intel graphics. I'm confused with the models. For example what's the difference between these two?

http://ncix.com/products/?sku=56223 -
They're the same. They just have different SKU #s (retailer's inventory #).
They're both I3-370M / HD 5650 models. And NCIX is a very reputable commercial supplier. Read their return policy before you buy.

You can order a 3820TG US keyboard for around $20 on Ebay.. If you're not comfortable replacing it, any local computer store can do it (like geek squad) it is very simple.

why am I not getting taxed for any of these? Is there no tax when buying from canada?
I practice other language's so its no bigg to me, but what keys are different between the two?
and this is the link. -
opsss, wrong thread
-
Same issue, I ordered on the same day, same problem. It shouldn't take more than 2 days to ship...if it does I am in a pickle because I will be gone.
-
Ahh, cool. Good to know.
-
Mine was delivered 2 weeks ago and it is still listed as "in process". If you want to know if it shipped call Eric.
-
If it will make you feel better, you can send me the tax.
-
Glad to see there's no tax between Canada and USA for these units.
-
Are you certain? They are different prices ~$16 different. One is listed as an AS3820T the other AS3820TG. Nowhere in the specs does it list HD 5650 only in the title.
-
They're labeled as 3820T and TG models. But if you read the product descriptions they are both the AS3820TG-374G50nks model, MFG Part No.
LX.PV102.288. I don't see any difference. Plus, the T and TG models should be $100 apart in price. I would check when I called to order.

NCIX dosnt accept credit cards or debit cards so paypal is the other option. Anyone use paypal for there machine? Is there a fee for paying across country's with paypal? I didnt see any fees when I looked on there site(paypal).
-
Question: Any particular insights as to the buying experience between Cendirect and Lucomputers? Both seem to be offering the 3820tg at a very similar price including shipping to my location in USA. Any reason to go with one over the other?
-
I wouldn't buy anything expensive with anything but a credit card. Thats just me, I would not use papal, debit cards, cash etc... The reason being you are protected by law with a CC as a consumer. So if something crazy happens, you don't have to worry. Paying 20-30 more for that doesn't bother me.
-
There's a currency conversion fee no matter how you do it. Credit cards, Paypal and even banks charge you a fee. Bank fees are hidden in their crappy exchange rate. I've used paypal for notebook purchases before with no problem. I prefer AMEX because fo the extra warranty you get with it.

Just an FYI if anyone is more comfortable buying through eBay.....
Spotted the 3820TG i3 5650 from what appears to be Lu Computers (Canada)...
eBay - Acer Laptop AS3820TG-7360 (LX.PV102.288) i3-370M hd5650
The price appears to be a bit higher...perhaps to cover their eBay transaction fees.
Hope this helps
-
You aren't protected by law, the CC just offers buyer protection, many offer extended warranties, etc. PayPal also offers buyer protection similar to a credit card.
-
You are covered under the consumer credit protection act. You do not get that with any other service.
Paypals protection is just them saying they will protect you....nothing more. If they side with the seller you are screwed, unless you want to break the TOS agreement. It is nothing like a CC. -
Just took the plunge and ordered a 3820tg from Lucomputers. 4820tg unavailability really made the decision for me. I wanted the i5 in th 14" size but I am sure I'll be happy with the device when it gets here. Looking foward to the reduced weight, flex, and heat. Also got a great deal so I'm excited about that, too.
-
@kevt119
Congratulations on the decision...
If you would...keep us up-to-date and post your impressions when you get it...particularly concerning the screen. I am curious in light of the recent screen discussions.
@everyone
Are there instructions around here for upgrading the CPU in these units (the Canadian i3 models) to an i5?
Thanks. -
Actually, a couple of them. Look in the owners thread.

Is there any Canadian Retailer that ships the Acer 3820TG with a regular keyborad right away?
-
What's different between the canadian and american layout? If they are different can anyone provide a link to an American keyboard that will work? Thanks. I didn't know there was really any difference unless it was a french canadian keyboard.
-
Finally got ahold of Eric via email and he got me a tracking number. Should be delivered tomorrow (though I doubt I'll be here to sign for it) so I should have it friday. Yay!
-
It's the bilingual Eng/Fr keyboard. The enter key is oversized and the "\" key is moved over to the left, where the long shift key is shortened. The problem is that you hit the "\" key when you go to shift. It's annoying.
There is a 3820TG keyboard now for sale on ebay that sould just snap right in. http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Acer-Aspire...83?pt=PCA_Mice_Trackballs&hash=item483d46c26f If you would rather buy from an American supplier http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Acer-Aspire...19?pt=PCA_Mice_Trackballs&hash=item2eb1130bab
Bronsky
No. All of the models have the bilingual keyboard. It can be used out of the box.

I love NCIX. Didn't get the laptop from them (bought before they had available), but I have had them build 2 desktop systems for me and ordered a whole bunch of other stuff peacemeal over the years - absolutely great to deal with.
-
you sure? I always buy from them on Visa (maybe this is only enabled for Canadian cusotmers, but since they have a US website that would seem a bit odd). Just make sure your billing and mailing address is the same.
Also, re paypal, I buy from US vendors all the time. makes no difference. -
I bought from Cendirect and was very happy with the experience. They gave personal customer service when needed, including calling me in response to a few email questions just because they thought it was the best way to go about resolving issues.
I had a unit come to me DOA (keyboard didn't work) and they got Acer to accept a return the next day even though Acer was giving me the runaround.
Would definitely buy from them again. -
meh, you're not really protected. I've had service providers put massive extra charges on my cards without authorization and when I contacted VISA they said since I authorized the service provider to charge my card for one thing I would jave to sue them to recover any money they billed for anything else.
Had the same thing when my wife gave her card number to an Internet scammer offering free something or other. Was told, in effect, that they know this is a negative option subscription scam that you signed up for, but since the vendor was in Panama and this was legal and they had it in fine print (even though the fine print was conveniently not a fuinctioning link on the website), you were stuck and would have to deal directly with the vendor to resolve.
Credit cards are only good for stright up fraud (and some offer free insurance), but I think most other payment methods offer similar benefits (other than the insurance). -
That may be the case with VISA cards because VISA is nothing more than a brand name. Each company that issues the VISA card is different and more or less honest or responsive. American Express is very different. You can throw the entire transaction into a dispute process that the merchants normally want to avoid. Do any of the Canadian Retailers take AMEX?
I have never had a problem with paypal so I don't know how they are. -
Thanks for the insight. When I woke up today I decided to go for it and ordered from Lucomputers. Just confirmed my order with Eric over he phone. Glad your experience was positive ... looks like there are multiple quality merchants to get this laptop from.
-
Just placed my order for a 3820TG from NCIX
Came out to $754.53 USD Shipped with insurance
Paid with paypal (instant bank transfer, they do not accept credit cards)
Hope everything runs smoothly.
Planning on buying a i5 460m off ebay in the future to upgrade and get a SATA II SSD if black friday offers good deals for em.
-
Do you have a link to the 3820TG you purchased? The one I found is $749.99 without shipping.
-
My AMEX card protects me through thick and thin. I have never, ever had a problem with them. Number has been stolen plenty of times, and I had a new card in my hand less then 24 hours later....no charge. I will never use another card, unless I have to. Dealing with this makes me realize I need a Visa/MC CC, I don't have one, and had to use my GF's for this transaction. I will probably get a chase, I think those are the Visa that competes with AMEX in the way they treat the customer.
Some people mix up MC and Visa debit cards with the real CC, there is a big difference. Just why every financial advisor says buy anything important with your CC.
I looked all over for an AMEX place, and think I found one in my hunt, forget now, but they had no returns etc... I just didn't want to deal with a company that can not do basic returns on their items.
I too have never had a problem with pay pal, but I am not willing to buy large items with it. I can use my AMEX with them, but if I call AMEX and complain I am being mistreated, I will violate the Paypal TOS. -
Not to take this any further OT, but regarding Chase, I have not had good success with them. I had to constantly watch my statements for "phantom" charges from Chase. Not to mention skyrocketing my rate even though I had great credit and never missed a payment with them and always more than minimum. I even had a Toys R Us card through them where they mysteriously charged me a $15 late charge, even though my card was paid in full, never sent me statements (never get them for no balance cards anyhow), and it ran for six months ending up with over $250 in late charges and interest. Needless to say I had to run that up the ladder and quickly received a refund. No apology, just a refund.

in the cart is came out to around 725 USD and shipping is 20$ and insurance is 10$

That link showed up when I searched their site for a 3820tg. Right now when you search it brings you to the same model in a different looking page that lists for 766.67 instead of 749.99 CAD
-
Thanks. I'll definitely keep the thread updated once I receive the unit, etc. So far so good with the buying experience at LU Computers. The unit shipped out today, same day I placed the order, and it's slated for delivery on Monday.
-
Thanks! Forgot about the exchange rate. So US dollar is actually a little better than canadian dollar now, eh? Hmmm, I'm very tempted. Won't have the money until next week, but it would be a nice small powerful laptop to supplement my larger laptop.
-
Yes they have about 97.6 cents to the dollar
-
Hi just a quick question, I think I have seen the answer before but can not seem to find it as of right now, so just want to get a straight out yes or no.
Will the Acer warranty transfer to the US if bought in Canada? Also, is the keyboard swap as simple as unplugging, plugging the new one in and clean installing Windows 7 English onto the device?
Really want this laptop, just wish it was available to get with no hassle but I'm willing to put up with some hassle to get this thing.
