Does anyone know where that configuration of either laptop can be bought in Canada?

USA Either on the 3820 w/ 5650... These guys are missing out on a big market share. IT'd be nudging into the alienware m11x pretty hard for those who don't mind an extra inch or two.

No, the 4820TG in I3 and I5 versions is available now in the US at Microcenter. $799 I3 & $899 I5. The 3820TG is available in Canada at Staples but with the HD 5470 GPU.

3820TG in U.S can potentially kill sales for Vaio Z, M11x R2 and Envy 14. The only thing 3820TG lacks is high def screen but at 13.3" it isn't bad.

So, americans can't get the 13" and canadians can't get the 14"?

BTW 3820TG at staples.ca is $799 canabucks. That's the same price I paid for an Acer Aspire 5720 three years ago.

Whats the performance hit with a 5470 compared to a 5650?

IIRC 80 shaders vs 400 shaders, 64bit mem vs 128bit mem.

It's worth the effort to get the HD5650.

How bad are the heat problems with the 4820? If they 3820 doesn't show up, it might be worthwhile to go for the microcenter 4820.

Yeah, IMO there is no point of getting it without the HD5650. The 3820TG serves a sorta-niche market that wants portability with decent performance. Take out the 5650 and you'd be on territory with plenty of competition from Asus and other manufacturers. What makes the 3820TG cool is the portability (size and ~4lbs weight) and performance (HD5650 and non-UM i-series processor).

The only real competition here is the Sony Vaio Z (too expensive), Envy 14 (portability isn't as good -- too heavy, but it does have an optical drive), and maybe the Alienware M11x (gimped processor though).

Take a look at the 4820T vs 4820TG thread. Alyafan and ngaw's test could give you better idea of what to expect.

Good move by acer. Too bad they've made the laptop unavailable in Canada (as usual, we get the lower grade hardware).

A shame that it's a niche market. Maybe in 5 years it won't be? WHat could be more important than a medium-size laptop with power under the hood

Hopefully society will learn one day, heh.

Stuck on on the 5470. I guess I couldn't justify paying more for the 5650 since I've already got a desktop gaming rig.

This is probably old new by now, but the 3820TG with HD5650 is available in Canada now. I can see it in stock at Canada Computers, and out of stock at amazon.ca.

It was $729 at Canada computers after $20 rebate (expires Oct 21). At that price, it will give any laptop with discrete graphics a run for its money.

Acer Aspire TimelineX AS3820TG-7360, Notebook - Intel Core i3-370M, 13.3" HD, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, ATI RADEON HD 5650, Wireless N, Webcam, HDMI, Windows 7 Home Premium | Canada Computers
