    Hi!

My girlfriend just bought an Acer 4715z with vista preinstalled - and it uses about half the 2 Gb Ram just running the OS (which I don't find optimal) - so I'm thinkinking about installing XP instead - is there any problems I should know of ???

And then I have tried to find the drivers on Acer's homepage but cant find any for the 4715z !!!
But when you dl the manual it's the one for the 4315/4715z you get - so I thought it's about the same notebook and compared them - and the only difference I found is the processor:

    4715z: Intel® Pentium® dual-core mobile processor (1 MB L2 cache, 533 MHz FSB), supporting Intel® 64 architecture

    4315: Intel® Celeron® M processor with 1MB L2 cache and 533MHz FSB
    Link: http://www.acer.dk/public/page9.do?...xParam=da&ctx3=-1&ctx4=Danmark&crc=3113046656

Don't you think it's the same notebook - except for the processor???
And don't you think I can use the drivers from the 4315 for the 4715???

Hope to hear from you soon!!! :)

Yeah, most of the drivers for the 4315z should work for the 4715z.

    Thanks for the quick reply!

I have now found that for some of the drivers it says they are for vista - do anybody have an idea if they will work on XP???

So far it's the drivers for webcam, wireless etc...

They might but Acer's ftp ite lists some of the drivers as both Vista and XP compatible....
    ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/notebook/aspire_4715_z/driver/

have you tried installing those drivers?

Yet again - thanks for the quick reply! :)

No I haven't tried installing XP yet because I don't know if I'll be able to use the Acer eRecovery management program in XP - any ideas???

Acer didn't provide any installation cd's - so the only ones I got is the the ones I made my self with eRecovery which is a factory default disc (an image of the complete OS I think). If only I had normal installation cd I wouldn't have hesitated - anyone who knows how eRecovery is working and where you get it from for the 4715z???

Another Question: if I install XP and make the partitions of the HD: 15 Gb for OS and another partition for other stuff instead of the partition 80 Gb and 80 Gb it came preinstalled with - would I then be able to use eRecovery and reinstall Vista if XP doesn't work???

I have read here in Acer Forum, that as long as you use your recovery disks that you made with eRecovery, you should be fine even if you completely reformat and re-partiton the harddrive. The recovery disk are a snapshot of the entire HD and should restore it back to factory settings. Hidden partion, OS partition and data partition. Though I don't have first hand experience, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I bought my wife a 3680 with vista basic and had all intentions of wiping it clean and installing XP Pro. But after a few weeks she seems to be happy with vista and it's running fast enough for her needs. Maybe let her try vista for awhile and see if it works for her. Just a thought.
