The OEM 80 gb HDD shot craps. Changed to a SATA 250 gb new hdd. Decided to load XP Professional (OEM was Vista Home Basic). Now the notebook won't even boot or even recognize the CD. Blank screen but the fan is running. Should I load Vista onto the HDD? Or do I have a more sinister problem such as a bad processor or bad memory?

You can check the RAM by first removing one stick and then trying to boot with the other. Repeat the test for the other stick. If it boots with one stick and not the other, then the stick that didn't boot is bad. By the way, does the HDD light even blink? Is the screen backlight working?
