    Hi,

Just bought a Acer Aspire 5051 with Vista Home Basic. I'm getting horrible "scratches" on the sound output (a lot like the old needle on the record type scratch!). This happens whether I play music from the laptop HDD, a CD/DVD or from an external source (I have an external HDD with music).

    Ok, so steps taken:

    1) Updated windows drivers
    2) Unloaded un-necessary background processes
    3) Got rid of that awful Acer software - what a resource hog!
    4) Installed extra RAM - now 1Gb
    5) Defrag hard drive
    6) Checked Realtek & Acer for updated drivers - nothing

I suspect something else is causing this problem as during general usage, I get split second "freezes" - so for example, as I type this post, theres very short pauses.

    Any suggestions welcome! Thanks :)

Blimey Charlie, didn't notice Vista had a Performance Power Scheme. Just set it to Best for Performance and now it goes like a rocket up its behind. Problem solved. The music is very smooth and clear, not dropouts or scratches, and it starts up much quicker.
