I have an Acer Aspire 5100 that fixes itself on the trip to Temple.

The modem and sound have gone out 4 times, by the time it gets to Temple the sound and modem have started working. I’ve spent 60$ mailing this in and they keep sending it back saying no problem. My Warrenty with Acer is up next month. I did buy 2 more years with Wal-Mart but I’m so frustrated I just want to toss the computer.

I’d appreciate any suggestions. It’s been back 3 days this time it was with out modem and sound after only 3 hours time before last. Son suggested seeing if the modem and sound came back if unplugged and battery removed for two day. (That seems to be the only difference we can think of.) Some one else suggested sending it back with the battery in and see if it got there with the problem still there.

I’m planning on documenting as much as I can with screen shots because they clearly feel I’m a silly person who enjoys spending money and being without her computer.

    Help, please.
    Laura

Sounds like you got a haunted 5100 there!
But seriously I don't know what could be causing the problems you are getting. However now that I think of it some 5100's have been known to have a faulty mainboard southbridge which would cause some components connected to the southbridge (modem, sound etc) to work on and off but this is just a theory. Your idea of documenting the issues might be the only way to prove to acer that something is indeed wrong with the notebook.

The bios update is all they ever do when I send it in, so yes it's been done. I'm using the XP that came with it.
    Thanks for the support, LOL

I've wondered if they were doing something and just not saying but now I'm just tired of the machine. Maybe I should try an exorcism wonder if I could get the guys from Supernatural to visit. LOL

    Thanks

Last two times i lost the sound card and modem completely. When I opened systems it showed no soundcard no modem. When I redid the entire system, (alt F10 and a CD restore) it failed to find modem.

It's still working fine, I feel like I'm waiting for an anvil to drop on it, LOL. Maybe the ghost is holding down the modem now.

I'm still under warrenty so I'm hesitant to take it apart. We regularly work on towers but have not worked on the insides of a laptop.

I'll download the drivers for the next time it "goes away"
    Thanks Laura
