I am looking to buy an Acer 5100-3357 this week. It has 1GB of memory installed in it already. Can someone tell me if it has 1 stick of 1GB or 2 512MB sticks in it? I want to upgrade to 2GB when I get it. I just don't want to waste my time or money buying 2 sticks if I don't need to.

Thanks in advance for your help.

We can't tell unless you provide a link, usually 1GB is 2x512MB
It'll say on the specs of the Acer that ur planning to buy.

I have been unable to completely verify it but most likely it is 2 x 512mb ram modules you will get. It is done this way so that the laptop will run in dual channel mode that and it is slightly cheaper for acer to do it that way. Hey I have a 5102 with 1gb and I have 2 x 512mb the higher 5102 has 2gb and you guessed it 2 x 1gb so dual channel is always in play. The only time you are guaranteed to only get 1 module is when you have only 512mb...

Sorry I could not help you any further

Thanks guys. I will get 2 sticks of 1GB and save the others for a bad day when the ram goes bad.

I know about CPU-Z but if you read my original quote you would have seen that I have not purchased the notebook yet.

Just picked this one up at Circuit City. Sadly, it's 2 X 512 sticks. About $130 on Crucial's website gets you a 2GB Kit (2X1GB sticks).

So far it seems to be running fine other than the memory hog (vista) running on it. I'll probably be doing at least the 2GB, remember the max is 4GB so you can spend about $700 for 2X2GB kit. Then that's more than what I paid for the whole laptop :D

    Fun stuff.....

    Good Luck!

    Hi,
Well I bought this baby...I'd be happy with the gig of RAM if it were XP, but with Vista it's kinda slow (well, the video is shared and snatches 256mg).
However, I am a compidiot and don't know enough about operating systems to know what to expect.

    2 issues:
1). When I started up my nice *new* store-bought computer (straight-from-the-sealed-with-brand-name-labeled-tape box), I got the "window unexpectedly shut down" message. Um, that really shouldn't happen with a new computer, should it?

2). Any idea what would make tracks from a *playing* CD 'pop'?
Yes, it sounds like I'm listening to an LP.

I'm thinking it's most likely the speakers. Could it possibly be the operating system???

I've ripped the same CD onto the laptop and it 'pops' as a file too. However, I burned a copy to CD and it doesn't 'pop' as a burned CD. I also ripped it to my desktop and no problems there either.

    =================
Another problem was a crash during the installation of the new Vista media center. Now media center doesn't always close.
And some of the trial DJing software I thought I would try doesn't always close either. Or seem to work right. i'm assuming this is a Vista compatability issue.

I think I like the computer (it's hard to tell if the operating system sucks or if there is a hardware problem).

The computer came with a free upgrade to Vista home premium ...does anyone know if that will make a difference?

    And the ultimate question:
Does anyone have any experience installing wiping a Vista-ized hard drive and installing XP in it's place?

    Hi,
Just thought I'd mention that the music has 'pops' when using my head phones too, so it's not the speakers.
I maxed the performance vs. appearence setting and that hasn't fixed it.

    :(
