I have an Aspire 5101 and the filing system is set at FAT32, is this the standard file system as supplied.
If not, I should like to change to NTFS and would like to know how to do this, and if so, I do will there be any loss of data.

    Thanks for any advise

To format the drive the easiest way is to use a windows cd if you have one, its strange that it would be supplied as fat 32. And you would lose all data.

    Thanks for prompt reply.
Most certain I do not want to loose all data for obvious reasons.

Found a link which suggested that this may be possible to solve problem.
Would be grateful for your comments

To convert a file system from FAT (or FAT32) to NTFS you need to type the following command (at the Command prompt)
convert Volume (or Dive letter) /FS:NTFS
    Example: convert C: /FS:NTFS "

If this does the trick would the data still be OK

    Thanks again from a Newbie

I assume it would be as, ur obviously changing the drive with windows on so it would have to leave that intact. The best thing really would be to back up ur data jst incase, i always do that wen doing anything with ma hard drive. Hope this helps. If you want ill research further for you.

Yeah, the data will be fine, the way it is.
You can backup your really precious data though.

Thanks to both Chucklz and Andy

Most helpful to find experts on this subject. I appreciate your guidance.
I think I will do a back up to a separate external drive before I do the change

Will let you know how it goes in due course

    Thanks
