I tried to install Windows 2K on it, but it shows bios is not ACPI compatable....
After press F7 is works, but after goto desktop, USB not working, Card reader not working....even Realtek network card not working.
I have install newest driver already.
and I found a new problem, the DVD drive UJ-850S seems have problem to read CD-R media.
Sometimes I can boot with my CD-R CD, but most of time it even can't read it!
I tried many different CD-R media and most of them can't read!
Is anyone have newer firmware for this DVD-RAM drive???

Ok first do you have the 2.83 bios for the 5102 found here
http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_5100.html this bios fixes a number of issues with the 5102
Second the 5102's current stock of drivers were designed for windows XP and not win 2000 therefore you obviously cannot complain if components don't work under win 2000 there is a reason why it has that sticker on it "designed for windows Xp" that doesn't mean it won't work with 2k but if you want 2k you got to be prepared to do some searching and accept any compromises. And why are you trying to install windows 2000 on the 5102 when it came with a perfectly stable version of XP?. IMHO stick with XP there is nothing that 2000 can do that XP can't...
That dvd drive problem I have heard about and perhaps you can check out this thread and try what was posted

Thanks for reply.
I tried BIOS 2.6 and 2.83, both of them have ACPI problem when using win2K installation.
The reason I want to use 2K? I don't like those fancy function in XP, I don't need it
After clean boot up, win2K take 80MB, but the winXP came with 5102, even I stop those startup program, it took 300MB
and I want to play morrowind on my notebook, so I can play it anywhere I go, cccccccc
Now I know it's not 2K compatiable.....so change back to WinXP 64 for gaming again.....
About the CD drive reading problem, it's not a driver problem, it's the capability to read CD media. I tried to boot from several different OS boot CD on different CD-R media, sometimes it works, but most of time it dosn't work.
Kind of weir to me, that's why I want to find a firmware to make it more compatible with CD-R.
Is EVO your ride? Nice car!!!! -
I don't see why 2K wouldn't be compatible, when both 2K and XP are NT.
-
win2K runs, but lots of device won't work.
I guess no one write 2K driver for chipset or didn't really test it.
Because there are not many ppl using this notebook like me Lol.
By the way, ATI sux.....their website sux, and their driver sux too.
Next time I will get a Nvidia. -
I love my ATI! Both of them, they don't suck, well only on Win2k
Also you have the lowest end ATi GPU, and the Lowest end X2
It's not working because you are putting Win2k on a Motherboard that was designed for xp, and vista.
so was the CD drive
So was your USB and card reader
Acer will not release drives for it. garrente
300mb That's it? mine uses almost 650mb on startup
Use XP, set the theme to 'maximum' preformance which makes it look like Win2k but give greater stability + you have all your hardware + all the drives for USB sticks and other hardware that comes with XP -
-
well I'm not sure is it the lowest end or not, but I'm sure it's the most popular chipset right now~~~~
If they don't give support to their "most popular" product.....well......what can I say? Lol
ATI product is fine, the problem is their website and driver support, that's what I said. -
.
Also the ATI IGP and chipset in your notebook is OEM spec therefore ATI has nothing to do with either it or its drivers, acer is who you have to blame here for drivers not ATI.
I emailed acer about the lack of driver updates and the tech support person emailed me back and said they are only releasing drivers so that the notebook will work as advertised, that means as long as it is working they ain't going to update anything which then therefore means you have to find the component driver updates yourself. If you use the ATI drivers from their site be prepared to get NO support from acer they clearly spelled this out to me as well
. The strange thing was that the tech actually told me to try Omega drivers to update my driver but he then said acer doesn't support them either
.... And remember as I said in my previous post "designed for windows XP" means just that, now it could work with win 2k but you are on your own there as the drivers weren't designed for it ( if you don't believe that then why are there XP drivers and 2k drivers? there has to be a difference there). Therefore you have no right to complain IMHO if you cannot get drivers from acer you just have to find them on your own. It would be the same position if you wanted to use linux...
So think about all of that before you blame ATI when the real culprit is acer ! -
haha...yes....actually I email Acer for driver support before, I know what you mean.
Acer they don't do any new driver support, too bad.
Anyway, there are lots of ppl on this forum using Acer 5102, maybe all we can do is sharing all new driver and bios information.
We are on our own.....
