Downgrading an Acer Aspire 5310 from Vista to XP SP2. The XP install disc cannot see any hard disks because the 80Gb has an unsupported SATA AHCI interface. I downloaded the storage driver from the Acer website, pressed F6 during the XP install to load the additional driver- but it needs to load from an additional device- like a floppy. This laptop has no floppy drive and pressing S to specify additional device to load the driver gives no further options other than press F3 to quit setup.
How can I load the SATA AHCI driver during XP install without the floppy? Is there a way to blend the drivers and XP install disc onto another CDR to install from? How?

i don't know how to do it, but i have heard others mentioning "slipstreaming" the sata drivers into the xp install. try searching that in the forums. you should be able to get your answer.

    Thanks Ejl,

Did the big search- found a handy slipstreaming program called nLite and instructions how to use it in the google cache. Created my slipstreamed XP install disc and can now install it into the Acer. Problem solved :)

As a point of interest; you should be able to disable AHCI mode in the BIOS; if the option isn't there then an upgraded BIOS is needed.

Hey there nz_flyboy, I am presently in the process of doing the exact same thing with an Aspire 5310. I have been on to the Acer website to try and locate these SATA drivers, and even written to tech support, but have not found them? Can you please let me know where you managed to find them? I have now downloaded and installed nLite and am anxiously awaiting your response!

Also, I noticed on the ACER site, there are seemingly no drivers (at all) for XP, only for Vista? Have you experienced any problems with the machine since you've downgraded?

Slipstreaming would be great, but might be difficult for some users. We've been discussing an alternative way to enable AHCI in XP here, which might work better for you. As Hairy_Lee said, you can get around the issue entirely by changing the AHCI in the Bios to IDE. If you don't have that option, just update your Bios to get it. I've yet to see any hard evidence that AHCI is better, but the rumors claim slightly better battery life among other things. I'll take any help I can get on my measly 6-cell 2-hour unit! ;)

I had to go into the bios and change it to IDE instead of AHCI and then my XP disc worked perfectly fine.
