I would like to replace my 14" Acer Aspire 3680 with a 15" Aspire 5315. I can either get a 5315-2713 (dual core celeron T1400) or a 5315-2639 (same dual core celeron t1400).

I would want to yank out the celeron and install a C2D processor the day I get it. Does anybody have either of these exact models (5315-2713 or 5315-2639) and upgraded the processor? Ive read through the 5315 upgrade pages "stickies", but couldnt find anything pertaining to the 2713 or 2639 version of the 5315.

I have the 5315-2122 ($350) that came with a celeron and 1gb ram with vista basic. Soon as I got it, I bought a C2D T5450 off ebay new for 50 bucks and bought another gig of ram for about 40 a few weeks later. My laptop rocks now with vista. Gaming...not so much as it has a intel X3100 but for everything else its just fine.

Why do you want to replace your current laptop?

What is the difference between those two models? After a quick search, it looks like the hardware is essentially the same. Maybe I missed something.

I just bought a used 5315-2153 off ebay for $222.50. I have a t5750 processor, 120gb hard drive, 4GB of Memory and a DL DVD drive laying around that I will be using on it as soon as it comes in. Has anyone tried loading Vista Home Basic SP1 x64 on one of these laptops?

I don't know. I haven't received it yet. I bought this laptop to experiment on before attempting to mess with my 7720 Vista installation. If all goes well, I will be giving it to my Sister for Christmas when done. I put 4GB in my 7720 with the 32bit version of Home Premium installed. It seems to be working fine and sees all 4GB even if it isn't using it all with a 32bit OS.

The 7720 has a bios version of 1.44 but I can only download 1.43 from the Acer Europe website. If I can figure out how, I will try to dump the 1.44 bios to disk so I can also use it on the 5315.

Good luck in getting the 4Gb working in the 5315, no-one else has managed it - but I don't think anyone else tried flashing the BIOS from another model.

I'm sure you are aware how risky that is! :)

The 5315 with the integrated webcam and 120Gb disc is worth paying a little more for, you also tend to get Vista premium included as well.

An Intel 4965 b/g/n with a third antenna will give you a useful increase in wireless resilience and throughput for very little outlay. It integrates perfectly with the platform when you install the latest driver from intel.

It is my understanding that the 7720 and 5315 use the same bios. I thought I read it on here somewhere. Is that not the case?

I don't remember seeing that myself and there have been many posts on the 3Gb RAM limit for the 5315.

Most of the progress on here has come from brave people trying things out as no-one from Acer will ever suggest something like using one model's BIOS in another.

There is a very good post on recovering a 5315 with a dead BIOS from a usb stick....are you feeling lucky?? :D

Yes, Aspire 5315, Aspire 5320, Aspire 5715Z, Aspire 5720, Aspire 7320, Aspire 7720 use the same BIOS.

Well, I don't know how to dump the bios off the 7720 anyway and I can't find it to download on the Acer website. So, if I need to update the bios, it will be to the 1.43 version. If 4GB doesn't work, I'll stick with 2 or 3.

    Holy hijacked thread :D :D

Ok, first. Mooler, to answer your question - I just want something with a bigger screen. I'll probably sell my 3680 to my work, but Im going to take my 100gb Hitachi 7k200 hard drive out first!!!

And, the 2212 isnt available at my local Microcenter. Only the 2713 or the 2639.

Does anybody have any experience taking the dual core Celeron out of the 5315 and upgrading to a C2D? Ive only taken out single core celeron and upgraded it (on my 3680). I dont want to buy the 5315-2713 or 2639 and find out I cant upgrade it or something.....

    Read my first post ;)

I DID read the sticky. It doesnt specify model post designations (i.e. 2713, 2639, etc, etc) hence explained in my first post why I made a new thread.

Ok I see another difference besides the HD. The 5315-2639 has a "WXGA" screen, whereas the 5315-2713 has a "XGA" screen.... seeing that they are the same price, but w/different hd's, whats the difference with the screens?!

I'm pretty sure the chipset/cpu socket is ALWAYS the same for all 5315-XXXX. And this is what counts for the CPU upgrade.

WXGA and Widescreen XGA are the same. The W stands for widescreen.

Seems OK, but it's had the screen replaced, if you go for it ask the seller why it was replaced. Also they havn't listed what the CPU is.

I've seen this one aswell on ebay, has more RAM (but you may need to travel to collect it):

    Ebay 5315

If you did get either of these, I would definatley consider doing a cpu and RAM upgrade, for an extra £100 you could have the thing flying. Thread about it here:
